Lesson 7: Reading
A. Develop your academic skills. Read the Academic Skill. Look at the chart with the text
Drivers who are distracted are more likely to crash. Some drivers make calls or send text
messages while behind the wheels. Others eat lunch while driving or put on makeup when
they stop at a red light. Even loud music or a conversation with a passenger can be dangerous.
All these things can take your attention off the road.
Every day, 29 people in the U.S. die because of drivers who have been drinking. This is one
death every 50 minutes! Drinking alcohol and driving is a bad idea. Alcohol impairs your
judgment and slows down your reaction time. If you are tired, the effects are worse.
Speeding is another cause of car accidents. In 2018, more than a quarter of all traffic deaths
were caused by speeding. Speed limits are there to protect all road users. Driving within the
speed limit gives you enough time to brake if you need to stop suddenly.
Drivers who don’t obey a stop sign cause accidents. Stop signs are used at busy junctions, such
as crossroads. Drivers must slow down, prepare to stop, and check for other traffic on the
road. Drivers should yield or give way, to traffic from the right. Even if roads seem empty,
there is never a reason to ignore a stop sign.
Dangerous driving causes a huge number of car accidents. Some drivers are aggressive, swerve
in and out of traffic, or drive too close to the car in front of them. These types of behavior are
known as “reckless driving”. Don’t forget your manners after you step into your car. If you
follow these steps, you can avoid the top driving risks. Driving with care and attention makes
the road a 30 nicer places for all users.

Yesterday, I took a taxi to a work meeting. When we arrived at the office, the taxi driver
started to park. Suddenly, I heard a loud crash. The taxi had hit an SUV when it was backing up
into a parking space.
The taxi driver jumped out of the car. He was very angry. He said, “Your car is parked too far
out into the road”. The SUV driver was angry, too. He said, “I parked correctly! Look! My car is
within the line”. He asked for the taxi driver`s insurance information.
I think the accident was the taxi driver`s fault. He was listening to loud music and singing. I
think he forgot to check the rearview mirror before he parked
B. Match each opinion with its reason. Which one is the writer`s opinion? Circle the

attention! You need to wait for my car to move before you drive.” I think the driver of
