Hub reduction gear RH835/735

Hub reduction gear RH835/735

General
The work description applies to two hub
reduction gears, RH835 and RH735. The
difference between the hub reduction gears is
that RH835 has five planet wheels and RH735
has three planet wheels.

Cleanliness
Cleanliness is extremely important when
working with hubs and hub reduction gears.
Contamination reduces their service life
considerably. Always clean the outside of the
hub before it is dismantled. Before
reassembling the hub, all parts, old as well as
new, should be cleaned.

Safety

! WARNING!

When working under a vehicle with air

suspension, the vehicle must be
supported under the chassis and
moving axle suspension components
as a safety precaution, to eliminate the
risk of getting trapped and injured in
case of a change in pressure in the air
bellows.

Setting press force

The press force attained depends directly on the
hydraulic pressure from the air operated pump
99 004. The hydraulic pressure delivered by the
pump depends on the input air pressure, which
is governed by a pressure regulator. 1 2 4

The air pressure can be changed with a knob.

Pull the red locking ring towards the knob and
set the desired pressure which can be read on the
manometer.
A chart on the pump housing specifies the
desired press force from the hydraulic cylinder 3
as a function of the air pressure input to the
pump. The chart is shown below.

127 853
1 Compressed air connection.
2 Pressure gauge.
3 Compressed air knob.
4 Pump housing chart.

Set the press force to 120 kN (12 tons) as

follows:

1 Follow the press force axis (the bottom axis)

to the right until you reach 120 kN.
2 Then follow the line straight up until it cuts
the bold diagonal line. Draw a horizontal
line to the left from this intersection. This
will end up at 5.2 bar, which is the pressure
required for a press force of 120 kN.

Oil

Oil

Introduction
The oil circulates between the hub reduction
gears RH735/835 and the central gear
RBP/RP735/835. The oil level in the hub
reduction gears may therefore vary depending
on how the vehicle has been driven before it was
brought into the workshop. Refer to function
description for hub reduction gears in the
Workshop Manual, main group 9.

! WARNING!

Use protective goggles when draining oil

from the hub reduction gear. Oil can
spray out at high pressure.

Help protect our environment. Dispose of excess

oil in accordance with workshop procedures.

Draining oil

Note: Measure the oil drained from the hub

reduction gear.

1 Place a suitable container under the hub

reduction gear.
2 Turn the hub reduction gear so that the oil
plug is at the lowest level.
3 Drain and measure the oil.

Filling with oil

2
For the correct oil grade, refer to Workshop
Manual Oils, fluids and lubricants in main
group 0.
1 Turn the hub reduction gear so that the oil
level mark on the hub cover is in a
horizontal position.
2 Fill with the same amount of oil as was
drained from the hub reduction gear.
3 Refit the oil plug. Tightening torque 40 Nm.

127 270
1
IMPORTANT! Check the oil level in both hub
reduction gears and in the central gear after 1 Oil plug
filling. Refer to the section on Checking oil 2 Oil level mark
level.

Checking oil level

For the correct oil grade, refer to Workshop
Manual Oils, fluids and lubricants in main
group 0.
1 Place a suitable container under both hub
reduction gears and the central gear.
2 Check the oil level in both hub reduction
gears and the central gear.
3 Top up with oil if the oil level is too low.
Drain oil if the oil level is too high.

Assembly

Introduction
The bearings in the hub should be preloaded.
The principle of the procedure is to first
assemble the hub with too many shims, then
measure and disassemble the hub to adjust the
number of shims.
The Assembly section is therefore divided up as
follows:
• Assembly, up to measuring the bearing
preload.
• Measuring and adjusting bearing pre-load.
• Assembly, after measuring and adjusting
bearing pre-load.

IMPORTANT! All bearings and wear rings are

pressed in with a press force of 60 kN (6 tons).

Note: Renew all O-rings and seals.

7 The bearing preload should be -0,05 mm to

-0.15 mm.
Shims are available in the following
thicknesses: 1.00 mm, 1.05 mm, 1.20 mm
and 1.30 mm.
Calculate how many shims need to be
removed.
Example:
The dial gauge shows +0.12 mm. The correct
setting value is -0.05 mm to -0.15 mm. The
total thickness of the shims should be reduced
by a minimum of 0.17 mm and a maximum of
0.27 mm.
Exchange two 1.30 mm shims for two 1.20 mm
shims. The total thickness of the shims is then
reduced by 0.20 mm. The bearing preload is
-0.08 mm.
8 Remove the hub and outer bearing as
described in the previous work description.
Remove the necessary number of shims
according to your calculation.

2 Place the planet wheel in an upright
position. Remove the plastic cover.
3
3 Fit a wear washer on one side.
4 Press off the cardboard tube with assembly 99 449
tool 99 449 from the other side.

Note: Press on the assembly tool in the correct 4

direction. See location of O-ring in the
illustration.
4
Hold down the wear washer so the needles
do not fall out.

Assembly

Introduction
The bearings in the hub should be preloaded.
The principle of the procedure is to first
assemble the hub with too many shims, then
measure and disassemble the hub to adjust the
number of shims.
The Assembly section is therefore divided up as
follows:
• Assembly, up to measuring the bearing
preload.
• Measuring and adjusting bearing pre-load.
• Assembly, after measuring and adjusting
bearing pre-load.

IMPORTANT! All bearings and wear rings are

pressed in with a press force of 60 kN (6 tons).

Note: Renew all O-rings and seals.

IMPORTANT! The seal should not be fitted when measuring the bearing
play. This may damage the seal.

7 The bearing preload should be -0,05 mm to

-0.15 mm.
Shims are available in the following
thicknesses: 1.00 mm, 1.05 mm, 1.20 mm
and 1.30 mm.
Calculate how many shims need to be
removed.
Example:
The dial gauge shows +0.12 mm. The correct
setting value is -0.05 mm to -0.15 mm. The total
thickness of the shims should be reduced by a
minimum of 0.17 mm and a maximum of
0.27 mm.
Exchange two 1.30 mm shims for two 1.20 mm
shims. The total thickness of the shims is then
reduced by 0.20 mm. The bearing preload is
-0.08 mm.
8 Remove the hub and outer bearing as
described in the previous work description.
Remove the necessary number of shims
according to your calculation.

downwards. Make sure that the seal is not damaged.
2 Hub Lubricate the lips of the seal with a little oil.
Note: Be careful not to damage the seal in the pulse
wheel when the hub is fitted.
3 Outer bearing Rotate the hub while pressing it in. The increased
turning resistance indicates that the bearings are
under preload.
