QUIZ 2
Direction: Answer the following questions based on your understanding of the topic. As
much as possible, as you answer, use your own words and never ever copy paste answer from
the net or from the discussion. Each item has equivalent of five points.

1. Explain the role of English language in modernization, globalization and most importantly in
education.
Everything changes except for the word change. Everything will modernize, will be upgraded and
language isn’t exempted. In the present day it is prevalent for many people to learn English
Language because it opens up more opportunities in different jobs and careers we want to have.
Globalization and English language are interconnected with each other because English language
plays a huge role in globalization. Globalization is the process of having connection with other
countries learning English language make it easier to communicate and have a great relationship
globally since it is the International Language. As what I have stated on my second sentence it is
same with education if you are proficient with English language there are many opportunities that
will open up for you not only in our country but in other countries as well.
2. Why it is the Malay nationalists oppose the policy of using the English language in the
classroom instruction especially in Science and Mathematics Subject?
Malay nationalists oppose the policy of using the English language in the classroom
instruction especially in Science and Mathematics Subject because the government has
found that the grades of the students have rapidly become low in the subject of science
and math when the English language was introduced.

3. What were the aims of Bilingual Policy implemented in Singapore?

To assure that Singapore can join in globalization on the one hand (through English) while maintaining
its concept of local identity on the other (through the mother tongue). With the development of
Singaporean English, a local version distinguished by influence from local languages at the levels of
phonology, lexis, syntax, discourse, and cultural customs, English has taken up both functions.

4. Why do you think Singaporeans considered Bilingual Policy as failed in helping people
retain their links to their traditional cultures?
It has failed to assist individuals in maintaining their ties to their traditional cultures, not just in
terms of literacy in Chinese but also in terms of their capacity to use Chinese dialects.
Unfortunately, the government now appears to recognize that its lack of support for dialects may
have been underestimated, as dialects, along with their related clan memberships, continue to play
a vital role in intraChinese interactions, both within China and outside (Tan 2007).
5. Cite the problems faced by the Teachers in the Philippines in implementing English as
medium in instruction?

The lack of interest of Students to learn, some are just not interested in learning it because they will
reason out that it is difficult to learn another is that they focus on learning other language for reason of
influenced by other dramas that they watch for example the Korean drams moiré teen agers as I have
observe focused on learning Korean language than English. Students only practice English Language during
class hours in English Subject once the class is done they will not care about reading educational books to
learn because we have Google just type anything that you want to know and you’ll have it in no time.
Laziness of students the most obvious reason that it is difficult for students to learn.

QUIZ 3. For 100 points.

Discuss your idea briefly by giving your opinion on the importance of using the English language
as medium of instruction. And as a student what do you think were the challenges in teaching this
language to the young learners? How will you react to the notion that the implementation of the
use of English Language will hinders the aim of culture preservation? Expand your answer by
giving situation based on your own experiences

English Language is considered as the international Language to communicate effectively with

other nationality. Learning and being proficient to English Language helps us to be connected and
have a widely understanding with each other as well as opens opportunities to us in terms of jobs
and careers. English Language as medium of instruction it is essential because it helps to mold
the mind of students for the future purposes just like migrating to other countries. As a future
teacher on my views the problem that I think I will encounter in teaching is that there are many
youngsters now who already are advance in learning they will just be un interested on the
teaching of English language because being advance in learning makes the youngster thinks that
they are already good enough without even studying it. I am with a situation where my nephew
who is just three years old wherein he is so advance with technologies, memorized already the
alphabet and numbers and even know how to operate cell phones finding educational videos on
YouTube. Hard to believe but even talking English he is already good as I am really surprised with
how advance his mind is in learning I am happy to see how eager he is to learn and soon as I am
about to graduate and become a teacher I would like to teach him in learning more. On my views I
would like to disagree that the implementation of English language will hinder the aim of culture
preservation just like what I have stated in my previews activity where I stated Jose P. Rizal as an
example you see I would like to emphasize that not because we implement to learn English
language doesn’t mean we forgot about our own language its purpose is for modernization,
acquiring language where it will makes us to have great opportunity in having good career not
only in our country but in others as well as for me I would like to learn more about English
language not only because I want to widen my vocabulary but also to have my dreams come true
in travelling different countries because learning and being proficient in English makes you have a
great communication skills and have a widely understanding with different nationality.
