Removing distributor assembly from vehicle

1. Remove the accessories which create obstacle to reach to the distributor.

2. Disconnect the vacuum hose or hoses from the distributor.
3. Disconnect the primary wiring running from the ignition coil to the distributor.
4. Remove the distributor cap, and push the cap and cable assembly aside.
5. Scratch a mark on distributor housing.
6. Scratch another mark, which lines up with the first, on the engine block.
7. Scratch a mark on the distributor housing which is in line with the direction of the rotor tip.
8. Remove the distributor hold – down bolt and clamp.
9. Lift the distributor out of the block.

Adjusting contact point gap

1. Remove the distributor cap and rotor.

2. Rotate the engine with the starter or by turning the belt until the points are fully open.
3. Measure the gap with feeler gauge
4. Loosen the point hold – down screw and move the points if adjustment is necessary.
5. Tighten the screw and check the gap
6. Apply cam grease on the distributor cam.

Installing distributor assembly on vehicle

Note
If the engine is not cranked while the distributor is out, the distributor can be easily installed in
the correct position. Simply, align the marks on the distributor housing and cylinder block. As
you push the distributor down into place, the shaft and rotor will turn as the spiral gears mesh (if
it is gear type). For distributors using spiral gears, start with the rotor turned back from the
installed position so that when you install the distributor, the rotor will turn into the proper
position. Then, the tip will line up with the mark on the distributor housing.

If the engine has been cranked with the distributor out, timing has been lost. The engine must be
retimed. This is necessary to establish the proper relationship between the distributor rotor and
the number 1 piston.

1. Remove number 1 spark plug from the cylinder head. Place a shop towel over your
finger, and cover the spark - plug hole.
2. Crank the engine until you feel compression pressure on you finger.
Note
You can also use other methods to find TDC of piston number 1.
3. Bump the engine with the starting motor or using the water pump drive belt until the
timing marks of the crankshaft pulley and timing cover are aligned. This means that
number 1 piston is in firing position.

4. Now, the distributor can be installed in the cylinder block. Make sure to align the marks
you made on the distributor housing and cylinder block. Check to make sure that the
distributor gasket or rubber O-ring is in place when you install the distributor.
5. You may have to turn the rotor slightly to engage the drive. Make sure the distributor
housing is fully seated against the cylinder block. If it is not, the oil - pump shaft is not
engaging. Hold the distributor down firmly, and bump the engine a few times until the
distributor housing drips into place. Then bump the engine again to realign the timing
marks.
6. Install, but do not tighten, the distributor clamp and bolt.
7. Rotate the distributor until the contact points just start to open to fire number 1 cylinder.
8. Hold the distributor cap in place above the distributor. Make sure that the rotor tip lines
up with number 1 terminal on the cap.
9. Install the cap with cables.
10. Connect the primary cable from the ignition coil to the distributor.
11. Start the engine.
12. Set the ignition timing.
13. Connect the vacuum hose or hoses to the distributor.
