1. PURPOSE
The purpose of this document is to detail the Procedure for installation of reinforcement
works for Reinforced Concrete Frame works (herein after RC Frame works) in (Mention
Project name). The documentation will apply to all Engineers, Workmen, QC personnel and
other concerned persons associated with the work.
2. SCOPE OF WORK
This Procedure covers the applicable codes and standards, sequence of work to be
followed for the rebar (reinforcement) work of different structural elements which includes
but not limited to columns, slabs, walls, staircase construction, manpower requirements,
tools and equipment required for the proper execution of works, quality and safety control
measures required to complete the work in compliance to the required codes and
standards.

4. RESOURCES
Materials
The steel used for reinforcement shall be
(a) Mild steel and medium tensile bars conforming to IS 432 (Part I)
(b) High strength deformed steel bars conforming to IS 1786.
(c) Hard drawn steel wire fabric conforming to IS 1566.
(d) Structural steel conforming to Grade A of IS 2062.
(e) Thermo-mechanically treated (TMT) Bars.
Tolerance on Nominal mass/weight: The tolerance percentage given as per the table
below.
+ for individual sample plus tolerance is not specified and (x) for coil batch tolerance
is not applicable. Tolerance shall be determined in accordance with method given in IS
1786.
High strength deformed bars & wires shall conform to IS 1786. The physical properties
for all sizes of steel bars are mentioned below.

Thermo Mechanically treated reinforcement bars:
The TMT bars shall conform to IS 1786 pertaining to Fe 415 D or Fe 500 D or Fe grade
of steel as specified.
Selection and preparation of Test sample.
Test pieces shall be collected from the bar or coil in the presence of the authorized
person. The test pieces obtained shall be further modifications. No deduction in size by
machining or otherwise shall be permissible. No test piece shall be enacted or
otherwise subject to heat treatment. Any straightening which a test piece may require
shall be done cold. Required tests are
Tensile Test: 0.2% proof stress and percentage elongation – Shall be done as per IS
1608, read in conjunction with IS 226.
Retest: This shall be done as per IS 1786.
Re-bend test: This shall be done as per IS 1786
On receipt of the material on-site, the reinforcement shall be checked against the
delivery details to ensure compliance. Manufactures’ Test Certificates (MTC) shall be
verified with the cast/Heat number tag attached to the steel bundle. Once the delivery
order and mill certificate have been stamped, approved and accepted the material
shall be stacked in the storage yards/ lay down area.
Steel reinforcement shall be stored in such a way as to prevent distorting and
corrosion. Care shall be taken to protect the reinforcement from rust. It may be
achieved by treating the surface of reinforcement with cement wash or by suitable
methods. Bars of different classifications, sizes and lengths shall be stored separately
to facilitate issue in such sizes and lengths to cause minimum wastage in cutting from
standard length.
The storage yards shall be set up to ensure that the quality of the reinforcement does
not adversely affect by keeping the material off the ground by always supporting by
timber / concrete pad. A suitable covering will be done whenever possible to shelter
from rainwater and dusts to avoid adverse effects of rusting and others.
Manpower
Safety of the personnel and properties is to be given prime importance and all
works to be carried out without causing any accidents or property damages.
Plywood and other related materials shall be stacked properly near the place of
work (Do not stack too large quantity near the work area thereby causing safety
hazard).
Height of the stack should not be more than one and half meter.
Working space to be clear of rubbish, waste mortar etc so that easy access and
cleanliness is ensured.

Scaffolding to be checked for the load carrying capacity and ensure no
overloading.
Before commencement of block work in front of lift shaft safety permit should
be taken.
Hard barricading to be cut only by gas cutting (If any anchored in concrete
along the openings and edges of the building).

Approved Good for construction drawing with latest revision issued shall be
available with the construction team
Shop drawings: Shop drawings for reinforcement shall be approved, stamped for
GFC as per the contractual requirement if any.

9. WORK PROCEDURE
General
Reinforcement shall be clear and free from loose mill scales, dust, loose rust, coats
of paints, oil or other coating which may destroy or reduce bond. Oily substance
shall not be used for removing the rust prior to assembly of reinforcement.
Cutting and Bending of Reinforcements
As per the construction program and the priority, the cutting and bending of steel
reinforcement for that particular structural element will commence as per the
approved shop drawings and bar bending schedule or BBS.
The cut length will be marked with a steel measuring tape, as shown in the BBS.
The bar will be cut with a shear line cutting machine.
For straight bars, after cutting the required numbers, it will be bundled and tagged
with bar mark number and stack for delivery to site/required location.

For stirrups and cranked bars, the cut bars will be taken to the bending machine
and bend as per dimensions in the BBS. During the bending process re-check
randomly with a template for dimensions.
Bars shall be bend cold with any suitable equipment such as hand operated
machines or power operated machines which mainly depends on the size of rebar.
Normally the methods are by using
Mandrel and claw which can be used for bending bars up to 12mm as per the
standards.
Simple bar bending machine which consist of mandrel, socket and a hole
Geared bar bending machine that have different parts such as mandrel, hole,
ratchet lever, plain roller, grooved roller and spindle.
Wherever facility for electric arc welding or gas pressure welding is available,
welding of bars shall be done in lieu of overlap. The location and type of welding
shall be got approved by the Engineer-in-Charge. Welding shall be as per IS 2751
and 9417.
Upon completing the required numbers, bundle and tag the bars with bar mark
number and stack for delivery to the site.
Binders, stirrups, links etc. the straight portion beyond the curve at the end shall be
not less than eight times the nominal size of bar.
Fixing
Columns and beams rebar’s can be assembled at the stock yard/storage area if
required and then hoisted to the designated place by tower cranes using trying to
hold the rebar configuration in place. If necessary, supplement bars or angles will
be added temporarily to increase rigidity of the prefabricated rebar. Sometimes
in such cases due to the congestion of rebars within the column, a part of beam
rebars still need to be assembled in place.
Over lapping
Overlapping of bars, shall be done provided as per the approved typical details. The
overlapping bars shall be bound together at intervals not exceeding twice the dia. of
such bars with binding wire of approved quality. The overlaps/ splices shall be
staggered unless otherwise stated in the approved details/drawing. But in no case
the overlapping shall be provided in more than 50% of cross-sectional area at one
section.

In case of cantilevered and doubly reinforced beams of slabs, the vertical distance
between the horizontal bars shall be maintained by introducing chairs, spacers or
support bars of steel at 1.0 mere or at shorter spacing to avoid sagging.
In case of columns and walls, the vertical bars shall be kept in position by means of
timber templates with slots accurately cut in them: or with approved quality of
cover blocks tied to the reinforcement to ensure that they are in correct position
during concreting.
In case of other R.C.C. structure such as arches, domes, shells, storage tanks etc. a
combination of cover blocks, spacers and templates shall be used as directed by
Engineer-in-Charge.
Reinforcement bars crossing each other shall be secured by binding wire (annealed)
of size not less than 0.90 mm and conforming to IS: 280-1962 Specification for Mild
Steel Wire (Revised), in such a manner that they will not slip over each other at the
time of fixing and concreting.
Every bars shall be tied at least in two perpendicular directions. Stirrups may be
staggered, provided it is ensured that the corresponding stirrups form a uniform
pattern in elevation.
10. INSPECTIONS
All the form works for all structural elements remains as HOLD POINTS and
Inspection to be carried out as per the Approved Inspection Test Plan and relevant
checklists as per Inspection Checklist is to be signed off.
11. TOLERANCE
The formwork shall be such that the finished concrete shall be in the proper position
in space measured with respect to certain predefined reference points. Formwork
should be of the proper dimensions and shape as per drawings. The tolerances on
the shape, lines and dimensions shown in the drawing shall be within the specified
limits given below:
