Note:

Density or API is provided by the terminal or

surveyor in the load ports and what is used will be
dependent on the region / port of loading.

For example in USA / Canada, Persian Gulf, API

usage is prevalent, while entire of Europe and Asia
uses Density at 150C.

CARGO CALCULATIONS 10
PROCEDURE OF CALCULATIONS

Working with API Gravity at 60oF :

1) Observed Ullage - apply trim and list corrections

- get Corrected Ullage
2) Observed Interface - apply corrections - get
Corrected Interface
3) From Corrected Ullage, find Total Observed
Volume (in metric cube)
4) From Corrected Interface, find Volume of Water
(in metric cube)
5) TOV - Water = Gross Observed Volume of
Cargo, GOV (in metric cube)

CARGO CALCULATIONS 11
6) Use API Gravity at 600F and Observed
Temperature (0F) and find Volume Correction
Factor (VCF) from Table 6A

7) Gross Standard Volume (GSV) = Gross

Observed Cargo Volume x VCF

8) Convert GSV in metric cube to US Barrels

( 1 m3 = 6.28981 barrels )

8) Find Weight Correction Factor (WCF) from Table

13

9) Weight in Air (Metric Tons) = GSV x WCF

CARGO CALCULATIONS 12
Working Examples
No 5 COT (P) Ullage 2.0 m , Trim 2m by stern, List
10 Stbd. API 13.5, Temp 1200 F

1)

Correction = +7.1 cm

CARGO CALCULATIONS 13
Working Examples
No 5 COT (P) Ullage 2.0 m , Trim 2m by stern, List
10 Stbd. API 13.5, Temp 1200 F

2)

Correction = +10.6 cm

CARGO CALCULATIONS 14
Working Examples
Observed ullage = 2.00 m
Correction for trim = 0.07 m
Correction for list = 0.11 m
Corrected ullage = 2.18 m

3)

CARGO CALCULATIONS 15
Working Examples
From the ullage table, volume for 2.18 m ullage =
10098.3 m3

Find Volume Correction Factor (VCF) from ASTM

Table 6A

CARGO CALCULATIONS 16
From ASTM Table 6A, VCF = 0.9783

Gross Standard Volume (GSV) = Observed Cargo

Volume x VCF

GSV = 10098.3 x 0.9783

= 9879.2 m3

Convert GSV in metric cube to US Barrels

( 1 m3 = 6.28981 barrels )

GSV in barrels = 9879.2 x 6.28981

= 62138 bbls

CARGO CALCULATIONS 17
Find Weight Correction Factor (WCF) from ASTM Table 13

CARGO CALCULATIONS 18
From ASTM Table 13, WCF = 0.15483

Weight in Air (Metric Tons) = GSV (in barrels) x WCF

= 62138 x 0.15483
= 9620.8 mt

CARGO CALCULATIONS 19
PROCEDURE OF CALCULATIONS

Working with Density at 15oC in air:

1)Observed Ullage - apply corrections - get

Corrected Ullage
2)Observed Interface - apply corrections - get
Corrected Interface
3)From Corrected Ullage, find Total Observed
Volume TOV (in cubic metres)
4)From Corrected Interface, find Volume of Water
(in cubic metres)
5) TOV - Water = Gross Observed Volume (GOV)
of Cargo (in cubic metres)

CARGO CALCULATIONS 20
6) Use Density at 15oC and Observed Temperature
(oC) and find Volume Correction Factor (VCF) from
Table 54A
7) Gross Standard Volume (GSV) = GOV x VCF (in
cubic metres)

8) Convert GSV in metric cube to US Barrels

( Use ASTM Table 52 to convert cubic meters
at 15oC to barrels at 60 deg Fahrenheit)

CARGO CALCULATIONS 21
9) Find Weight Correction Factor (WCF) from Table
13 ( need to convert density to API or use ASTM
table 3)

API = 141.5 – 131.5

SG

Where SG is the Specific Gravity of cargo i.e

density of cargo / density water

9) Weight in air (Metric Ton) = GSV x WCF

CARGO CALCULATIONS 22

Working Examples
From the ullage table, volume for 2.18 m ullage =
10098.3 m3

Find Volume Correction Factor (VCF) from ASTM

CARGO CALCULATIONS 26
From ASTM Table 5A, VCF = 0.987

Gross Standard Volume (GSV) = Observed Cargo

Volume x VCF

GSV = 10098.3 x 0.987

= 9967.0 m3

0.974
= 13.7

CARGO CALCULATIONS 29
