Systems of Equations
Solve systems of linear equations using graphing and methods of substitution and elimination.
Determine whether a system is consistent or inconsistent.
Determine whether equations of a system are dependent or independent.
Course Assignments
1. Readings
Read sections 8.1–8.4 of Ch. 8 and sections 9.1–9.3 of Ch. 9 of Introductory and Intermediate Algebra.
2. CheckPoint: Solving Systems of Equations Due Date: Friday May 6th
Complete the Week Seven CheckPoint in MyMathLab®. This activity provides the opportunity to
practice concepts introduced in sections 8.1–8.4 of Ch. 8.
Due Friday, post results in the eCampus Assignment Submittal Section.
3. Discussion Questions
Pro of graphing would be it may give only appromixmate answer when looking at the graph.
Some cons would be that graphing is not always accurate.
Pro of using substitution it gives you the exact answer to the equation. A con would be forgetting
the steps of operation.
Pro of using elimination is a exact solutions and without fractions. A con would be you cannot
see the solutions quickly without solving.
Personally, out of all three methods I like emliniation the most. It gives you the exact answer
without fractions and unsure points. It may take longer to solve equations sometimes, but it’s the
best way for me to solve systems of equations.
Respond to your classmates by indicating pros and cons they may not have considered. If you chose
different methods, try to persuade them to see the value of the method you like best. Describe situations
in which you might use their methods of solving equations.
Your initial post to DQ2 is due on Thursday May 5th
Sometimes it is very obvious which method is most efficient to solve a system of equations because of the way the
problem is set up. To be efficient, under what conditions would you use graphing? Elimination? Substitution?
Conditions in which you would use graphing would be when the equations are in
simple. For example when trying to find the x and y intercepts. Another condition would
be when you want to physically see the solutions to the equations.
Conditions in which you would use elimination would be when the equations are in
standard form.
Lastly condition in which you would use substitution would be when there are more
than 2 variables present
In Week Six, students practice inserting shapes and objects into images while creating a one-page
brochure or collage. Students also prepare a written proposal or outline detailing their final project
creation.
Course Assignments
You may need to save the file to your local computer in order to post to the assignments
section.
Resource: Appendix D
Submit a proposal for your Electronic Photo Creation explaining your project in detail.
Appendix D details specific project proposal criteria.
Write a 350- to 700-word proposal addressing the following:
o Explain your strategy to complete your final project with all the necessary components on
time.
