1 To understand our humanity one must understand the nature of language that makes us
2 humans. According to the philosophy expressed in the myths and religions of many peoples, it is
3 language that is the source of human life and power. To some people of Africa, a new born child is
4 a “kuntu”, a “thing” and not yet a “nuntu” a “person”. (1)Only by the act of learning the child
5 becomes a human being. Thus according to this tradition, (2) we all become “human” because we
6 all know at least one language. In other words, the possession of a language, perhaps more than
7 any other attribute, distinguishes humans from animals.
8 But what does it mean to “know” a language?” When you know a language, you can speak
9 and be understood by others who know that language. This means you have the capacity to
10 produce sounds that signify certain meanings and to understand or interpret the sounds produced by
11 others. We are referring to normal – hearing individuals. Deaf persons produce and understand
12 sign languages just as hearing persons produce and understand spoken languages. The
13 languages of the deaf communities throughout the world are, except for their modality of
14 expression, equivalent to spoken languages.
