Research Design and Methodology

This Chapter includes the research design and research instrument to be used.

Research Design

This study will utilize a descriptive correlational research. This research design will be used to
achieve the purpose in knowing the relationship between motivations and reading
comprehension of grade 8 students of Pinaglabanan High School.

This study used the descriptive design since it describe the motivational and comprehension level
of the students. Correlational in the sense that it will determine the relationship between the
students’ reading motivation and reading comprehension.

Research instrument

The data for this research will be collected using a survey-questionnaire which is divided into
two parts. First is the checklist that will gather information of the respondents’ motivation
towards reading. The second part is the measurement of the reading comprehension of the
students that will be composed of at least 15- item test wherein the students’ comprehension will
be tested. The test is called cloze test wherein it is used to evaluate the reading comprehension
that will reveal the reveal important insights about the skills and strategies used to guess meaning
from the text (Karasu, Girgin & Uzuner, 2013b, p.702). The students will be given a text with a
missing words in it. The students will try to find the appropriate word for the blank within the
text. The students need to be encourage to find the correct word.
