To Be An Observer in The Universe and Make A Difference
This entertaining story attracts many people, including myself. As someone who is a
wanderer and a seeker, this story reminds me not to give up easily. This story also teaches us
that we can make a big difference by doing little actions. An attempt has also been made to
analyze and appreciate the story and bring out the best lessons that man can learn from the
young man. This story is all about looking at the perspective from the other side.
In “The Star Thrower,” Joel Barker presents a young man who is picking up starfish
on the shore and gently throws them back on the ocean, illustrates the theme of choosing not
to be an observer in the universe and make a difference.
“From a motivation perspective, helping others enriches the meaning and purpose of
our own lives, showing us that our contributions matter and energizing us to work harder,
longer and smarter.” – Adam Grant. This story shows that we cannot understand a situation if
we will not look on the other side of the story, just like how the man underestimated the
ability of the young man by picking up every starfish on the shore and throwing them back on
the ocean. The young man initiates to do that every morning to prevent the starfishes from
dying, although the young man won’t be able to find and pick up all the starfish in time to
save them. Some of them will become food for predators. Others will dry out in the hot sun
and die. But still, the young man scans all over the shore, searching, picking, and very
hopeful that he can do more acts of care and save the little life of the starfishes. One action
can make a big difference. I can also compare this story just like our situation in this time of
the pandemic. I could find a sense of purpose in each small action that would slow the spread
of the virus. Wearing a face mask and being socially distant wasn’t going to wipe the virus off
the whole world but we should keep doing these little steps because these little steps are
making a difference. The same process regarding on the professional level we must translate
vision into reality through raising a person’s performance into a higher standard to build a
personality beyond its limitation. Improvements are an ongoing process and each person in
the organization should take one step at a time to meet the standard and qualifications within
the workplace. Build a strong understanding and trust to each and everyone in the
organization and share ideas to fulfill something in return. Make use of everyone’s skills and
help each other to achieve a certain goal. Small things take time to improve until reaching
their success.
“Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes time.
Vision with action can change the world.” – Joel Barker. These are the final words in the
short film. We must have a vision and then come up with the means of implementing and
articulating it and relentlessly drive it to completion because a plan without an action is just a
speech. Having a vision is not just a picture of what could be, it is also an appeal to our better
selves and become something more. We all have been gifted the ability to help and make a
big difference. A typical person or even professionals can do something to make a big
difference, help those persons in need, and have a positive mindset all the time to understand
someone’s perspective and situation.
And if I were the young man, I would always glance back and forth across the shore
and eye for what I can do and help. Not only regarding the story but also to portray this in our
daily lives. I may not stop doing something wrong as a Professional, but I’d rather avoid it
instead. This story will help me as a professional by reminding myself to be more productive,
maintain effective work, provide excellence, demonstrate integrity and be a problem solver.
As I go home and when I’m out of the workplace, I’ll be still doing these small things that
can make a big difference to other people by picking up a small piece of trash along the way.
Smiling sincerely to all those you have passed by and nicely greeting them. Clean as you go
when you eat in a restaurant. These little things can make a big difference and will also help
you to grow as a good human being.
