Time and Place in Novel

In the novel, authors have an unlimited imagination in the limited time and place that most of the

time they want to describe the situations of an individual (a point in common between

philosophers and novelists). But novelists have paid greater attention to the individual than it had

been common before, and novelists have the individualization of character. Individualization of

character needs an acquaintance about making time, place, and plot….. To plant the features of a

particular individual in character, therefore, we just analyze time and place in the novel.

The question is, what is the time and place? How do we use time and place? Have we any

analysis for time apart from a place?

Time and place is not just a subject and argumentation in this genre of literature; in science, time

exists physically, not mystically, time has a direct connection to space, and our planet or our

galaxy stands on two things that science calls the twin paradox (time and space). And if someone

can detect and attend to creature existence and their life connected to what? , he/she realizes

every creature and every side of this galaxy can stay on and keep existing by supporting time

anywhere (place). Thus far everything in our galaxy has worked constantly that based on some

rules, as Einstein says “God does not play dice”; also we cannot change those rules. In the real-

life the creator of time, space, place, rules… is God or some people say nature, but in the novel,
the creator is a novelist, he introduces, explains his purpose, and make some rules that make

readers feel the existence of character in reader’s life and one of the main point is individualizing

time and place with a situation of character because it is characterization reliance upon

presentation of background in a circle of finite time after this readers or audience can realize

character use a way to cerebrate and set plan to solve the problems or anything that gathering

around a character in a frame of time and place. In the novel character without position and time

does not exist, also character without thinking does not exist for supporting this sentence.

Descarte said, “I think, therefore I am”.

In the novel time has a different role from time in other genres of literature to continue the

process of narration and making a plot, and time is the heart of the plot because sometimes

novelists make plot by playing with time and when the author changes the time process of

accidents it means they want to develop their plot and make stronger his/her target or give more

meaningful purpose, also it is a kind of technique in the novel which is supported by the time.

The time in real life and novel is very diverse, the shape of the time in real life is a limitless

picture, and an individual has a question and explanation to his/her decisions, remorses,

pain, and transformations…. As time goes by. But in the novel, the shape of the time has

many different pictures, for example, a novelist can use 5 days of a character’s life to explain 50

years of an individual’s life because the novel has a considerable length of play with time, place,

innovation in making events and narration…. And this point attracts us to the idea: the novel is a

summarization of time and memories that a character identifies with his/her identity. For

supporting these concepts of time in real life and the novel, Locke says “The individual was in

touch with his own continuing identity through the memory of his past and thoughts and

actions”.
The image of time appears when it connects with a place; this sentence is right for the novel.

Description and identification of place in the novel are different from other genres; the attraction

of readers to an environment means attracting readers to some questions, why did he decide to

leave? How did he grow up in there? Why does this place look weird?.... And many other

questions refer to the character having a strong connection with the environment, and this is for

the similarity between the character and the individual characteristics, for example, Moll

Flanders and Robinson Crusoe much more completely to their environment than is the case with

the previous fictional characters.

In conclusion, the character can feel he exists after he/she can think and identification of his/her

identity or personality depends on the time then he/she find the cause and effects, according to

Descartes, Locke, and Hume, as time goes on, individual can identify and introduce his/her

identity or realize that he/she expresses their individuality through anything they have,

Afterward, he/she find causes and effects. Hume: “Had we no memory, we never should have

any notion of causation, nor consequently of that chain of causes and effects, which constitute

our self or person”.
