Bio-Culture Introduction
Bio-culture is a liquid concentrate containing a consortium of beneficial microbes, which acts as soil
conditioner. It acts as an anti-oxidant and develops a conducive environment for the crops to grow. Over
100 countries are using this technology successfully today.
Bio-culture includes both aerobic and anaerobic species of microorganisms, which co-exist in an
environment . Bio-culture mainly consists of Lactic Acid bacteria (Lactobacillus spp.), Azotobactor &
Nitrobactor. These microorganisms secret beneficial substances such as vitamins, organic acids, chelated
minerals, enzymes and antioxidants in a synergistic way, when it comes in contact with organic matter.
Microbes present in Bio-culture suppress the growth of harmful microbes and enhance the growth of
beneficial microbes in all the ecosystems. It controls purification by exploiting the fermentation pathway
of decomposition. These microorganisms are neither imported, exotic, genetically engineered or
modified.
Bio Augmentation is the application of a biological treatment, mainly microbes, to the cleanup hazardous
contaminants in soil and surface or subsurface waters. These microorganisms can be used to transform
them to less harmful forms.
The bacteria feed on the contamination, deriving nutrition for growth and for reproduction. Complex
chemical reactions occur, but the result of this natural process is that contaminants are used up
completely or are converted (or cleaved) into an innocuous product such as water and carbon dioxide.
The microbes will survive and consume their contaminant food source until the unwanted pollutant is
remediated.
Cow Dung – leads to coliform, fecal coliform and the stabilization time with cow dung is
normally 90 days.
Bio-culture - supplements useful bacteria into the ETP which suppress the growth of the
harmful/ pathogenic bacteria & leads to faster commissioning of the ETP.
Last 1 year complete ETP parameter’s (i.e. COD, BOD, pH, TSS, DO etc) data.
Quarterly Test Reports.
Quarterly Audited electrical consumption reports for the ETP.
Monthly consumption of the chemicals.
Plant layout chart.
Bio-culture is present in 5 Lit. PVC cans in dormant state. Before applying it in ETP/STP, it is required to
activate it according to the following table:
em
The ratio of Bio-culture, Mollasses and water for activation depends upon the quantity and
quality of the wastewater.
After the molasses has been well dissolved (possibly with the help of some warm water), the full
amount of water is filled into the container and Bio-culture is added.
Bio-culture must be allowed to brew for a minimum 5-6 days in an airtight fermentation tank. A
fermentation tank allows the activation of microorganisms whereby an optimal amount of
beneficial bacteria is obtained.
Dosing
Apply Activated Bio-culture at the rate 0.2L-1L for every 1000 L of wastewater by dripping.
There should be proper aeration. Diffusers are preferred over surface aerator.
The DO should be maintained above 1.5 to 2 ppm.
Chemicals dosing should be gradually decreased.
During non production period DAP and Urea should be added in the ETP/STP.
It will take 45- 60 days for stabilization of the plant.
The activated Bio-culture must used within two weeks.
Bio-culture contains photosynthetic bacteria which releases oxygen during the process of
photosynthesis.
This helps in reduction of the aeration requirement in the equalization tank.
Initiate the process of electrical reduction after achieving the effluent parameters well within
the PCB norms with DO level ranging b/w 2-4.
Initially stop the blowers at the Eq. tank for 15-30 min after every 4 hours of continuous
running. Simultaneous monitoring of the DO level should be done to check any decrease in its
value.
The stoppage time can be increased gradually to 30-40 min after every 2 hrs of continuous
running of the blowers with continuous monitoring of the DO level.
Note: The reduction in Electrical consumption may vary from plant to plant depending upon the
flow parameters & site conditions.
Benefits of Bio-Culture
Reduces the BOD, COD & suppresses the foul odor from the STP & ETP.
No structural changes are necessary for implementation of bioculture.
Enhance the overall efficiency of plant.
Reduce the overall chemical consumption.
Reduction in aeration requirement, electricity requirement is reduced by 10-30%.
Helps in faster commissioning of the plant.
Prevents the proliferation of pathogens.
Eliminate the foul smell.
Easily converts the organic waste into organic fertilizer.
Reduces the overall cost of operation.
It normally takes 45- 60 days to stabilize the ETP with Bio-culture Technology.
B) The chemical consumption shall stop right from the start of the Bio-culture execution.
The chemical consumption reduces gradually over the period of stabilization of the ETP.
