A Semi Detailed Lesson Plan on Grade 7 English

I. STANDARDS, COMPETENCIES, AND OBJECTIVES


A. CONTENT STANDARD
The learner demonstrates understanding of Philippine literature in the Period of Emergence as a
tool to assert one's identity; strategies in listening to and viewing of informative and short
narrative text; word relationships and associations; informative speech forms; and use of
direct/reported speech, passive/active voice, simple past and past perfect tenses and sentence
connectors.
B. PERFORMANCE STANDARD
The learners transfer learning by: showing ways of asserting one's identity; comprehending
information and short narrative texts using schema and appropriate listening and viewing
strategies; expressing ideas, opinions, and feelings through various formats; and enriching written
and spoken communication using direct/reported speech, active/ passive voice, simple past and
past perfect tenses and connectors correctly and appropriately.

III. PROCEDURES
PRELIMINARY ACTIVITIES
- Prayer. A student will be requested to lead the prayer.
- Checking of Attendance. The teacher will ask the class secretary to check who is/are absent.
- Classroom reminders/rules. The teacher will present the classroom rules.
A. REVIEW
List them all! In this activity, the students will give at least 2 examples for each figure of speech.
Processing questions:
1. What are the different figures of speech?
2. What is the purpose of using figures of speech?
3. How figures of speech help us in constructing sentences?
4. What is the importance of using figures of speech in creative writing?
5. Why do poets use figures of speech?
B. MOTIVATION
- Groupings and Incentive chart.
Song Tanong. The class will be divided into 4 groups. The teacher will play a minus one song.
The students must guess the song title. After giving the title, the student must provide a brief
explanation about what the song is all about. The winning group will receive points.
Process Questions:  

1. How did you find the activity? Was it easy or difficult for you to identify and give the song
title? 

3. What do you think those songs convey to us? 

4. What do you think is our topic for today?

C. VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT
Sorting Hat. The Sorting Hat vocabulary game is where you have students sort synonym words,
just as the Sorting Hat sorted Hogwarts students into houses. Identified difficult words with
example sentences will be posted on the board and they are the “houses”. The student will
analyze the meaning of the word using the example sentences so that they can sort the synonym
words from the hat. When students pull the word out of the hat, they choose which of the houses
the word(synonym) belongs in.

D. PRESENTATION OF THE LESSON /DEVELOPMENT OF THE LESSON


ACTIVITY

- The teacher will ask a question related to the topic.


o How do you feel as a Filipino? Are you proud or ashamed? Why? Do you consider yourself unique?

- The teacher will project a short background about the author Carlos Romulo
o Carlos P. Romulo, in full Carlos Peña Romulo, (born January 14, 1899, Camiling,
Philippines—died December 15, 1985, Manila), Philippine general, diplomat, and
journalist known for his activities on behalf of the Allies during World War II and his
later work with the United Nations.

- The teacher will share the overview of the essay “I am a Filipino”.


o “I Am a Filipino” is often considered a manifesto for the Filipinos’ dream of freedom
from colonial rule. It is the most famous literary work of Carlos P. Romulo and was
published in August of 1941 in the Philippines Herald.
- The teacher will present the guide questions which will be answered later in the class. The
questions will be distributed to each group.
o What are the true qualities of a Filipino as pointed out in the essay?
o What is the theme of the essay?
o What are the symbolisms used by the author?
o What figures of speech employed in the text?
o What does the essay tell us about the Filipino culture, values and traditions?
o Why the heroes were mentioned?

- The students will watch the video of I am a Filipino.

- Graphic organizer. Create a graphic organizer highlighting the Filipino characteristics,


values and practices You can choose a graphic organizer of your choice.

ANALYSIS

- Travel Time. After reading the text, each group will travel from one station to another. They
will discuss and reconcile their answers the question posted in each station. A representative
will present their answers.

ABSTRACTION

- Story Impressions. This is an activity wherein the students will select text and read and
reflect on it by giving of their thoughts, ideas, and reflections regarding the text. Then they
will identify what Filipino characteristics, values, practices and traditions are being
emphasized in the selected text. They will follow the format below.

APPLICATION
- Beat the Mission. A group representative will pick a fish with a number on it. Each group
will accomplish a different task related to the lesson.

Mission 1 Talk Show. A talk show is a television or radio show in which various topics are
discussed informally and listeners, viewers, or the studio audience are invited to participate in
the discussion. The group assigned in mission 1 will discuss Filipino values and practices.

Mission 2 Rap. Rap is a type of popular music of US black origin in which words are recited
rapidly and rhythmically over a prerecorded, typically electronic instrumental backing. The
group assigned in mission 2 will create and perform an original rap piece about Filipino
heroes and their contributions to the country.

Mission 3 Advertisement. An advertisement is the promotion of a product, brand or service


to a viewership in order to attract interest, engagement and sales. The group assigned in this
mission will create a live TV advertisement regarding Filipino culture and tradition.

Mission 4 Comical Skit. A comical skit is a short comedy sketch or piece of humorous
writing, especially a parody. The group assigned in this mission will perform a skit that
showcases the unique and distinguished traits of Filipinos.

- Before they will perform, the rubric will be presented to let the students know how they will
be graded.

E. GENERALIZATION/ VALUING
- The teacher will ask generalization questions to the students.
o What remarkable traits Filipino are known for?
o Despite your youth, could you name some things you have done that show you are a true
Filipino?
