Learning Activity 2

1. An experiment consists of asking 3 women at random if they wash their dishes with
brand X detergent.
A. List the elements of a sample space S using the letter Y for “yes” and N for “no”.
S = {YYY, YYN, YNY, NYY, YNN, NYN, NNY, NNN}.
B. List the elements of S corresponding to event E that at least 2 of the women use
brand X.
E = {YYY,YYN,YNY,NYY}.
C. Define an event that has as its elements the point{YYY,NYY,YYN,NYN}.
The possible outcome / event would be: 2 women wash their dishes with brand X
detergent.

2. List the elements of each of the following sample spaces:

A. The set of integers between 1 and 50 divisible by 8.
S = {8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48}
B. The set S =
{x∨x2+4x−5=0}.
S = {x | x2 + 4x – 5 = 0} = { – 5, 1}
C. The set of outcomes when a coin tossed until a tail or three heads appear.
T for Tails & H for Heads
S = {T, HT, HHT, HHH}
D. The set S =
{x∨x is a continent}.
S = {Europe, Asia, Australia, North America, South America, Africa and
Antarctica}
E. The set S = {x∨2x−4≥0∧x<1}.

3. A newly married couple is planning to have 3 children. List the elements of the
Sample S1 using the letter M for “male” and F for “female”. Define a second sample space S2
where the elements represent the number of females.
Let S1 be the sample space, where elements represents the three children
M =”Male” & F=”Female”
The Sample space S1 is: S1 = {MMM, MMF, MFM, FMM, MFF, FFM, FMF, FFM, FFF}.
Let S2 be the sample space, where elements represent the number of the female
children. Because 3 children are selected random, the number of selected female
children is 0, 1, 2 or 3.
So, the sample space S2 is
S2 = {0, 1, 2, 3}

4. An experiment consists of rolling a die until a 3 appears.

A. Construct a sample space for this experiment.
The sample space is the set of all possible outcomes for a sequence of k rolls. For
a six-sided die, and n rolls, there would be 6^n distinct, equally probable events
corresponding to the sequence of numbers that the die produces.

For example, if n = 4, we could have 2, 2, 5, 1 as one possible sequence, or 1, 6,

3, 3 as another. There is 6^4 4-term sequence
B. List the element in E, the event that the 3 appears before the fifth roll.

The number of elements which correspond to the subset of the sample space
where 3 arrives at the k-th roll or before can be found as the sum of SUM(5^i) for
i = 0 to k. This is a geometric series, whose k-th partial sum is (1 - 5^(k+1))/ (1 -
5).

For example, if 3 is to arrive for the first time on the 5th roll or earlier, we look at
the 1 roll event space, the 2-roll event space, the 3-roll event space, etc. up to the
5th roll.
For the 1 roll event space, we have 1 way of getting a 3 first.
For the 2-roll event space, we have 5 ways of getting a 3 second.
For the 3-roll event space, we have 5^2 ways of getting a 3 third.
For the k roll event space, we have 5^k ways of getting a 3 k-th.

5. Use the rule method to describe the sample space S that consists of all points (x,y) on
the boundary or in the interior of a circle of radius 3 centered at the origin.
The First condition is that point need to be in the first quadrant. So, the first
condition is: x ≥ 0 and y ≥ 0
The second condition is that point need to be inside the circle of radius 3 with
c
enter of the origin. The equation of a circle of radius 3 with center of origin is :
x2 + y2 = 32 = 9
Because we need to describe points inside of this center, the second condition is:
x2 + y2 < 9
So, the required sample space S is: S = {(x, y) | x ≥ 0, y ≥ 0, x2 + y2 < 9
