AIRCONDIONING ON

IR AC COACHES
BASIC TERMINOLOGIES

Latent heat : Heat which, when supplied to or

removed from a substance, produces a change
of state without change in temperature.

Sensible heat : Heat which, when supplied to or

removed from a substance, produces a sensible
effect on the substance, that is, a change of
temperature which is measurable by a
thermometer.
BASIC TERMINOLOGIES
 Enthalpy
It is a calculated property of vapour which is defined
as "Total heat content". It is the sum of the sensible
heat and latent heat.

 Critical temperature (Tc)

There is a certain temperature for every liquid or gas,
which is called its critical temperature. When a gas is
above its critical temperature, any amount of increase
in pressure cannot liquify it. When the temperature is
below its critical point, the gas can be liquified without
lowering its temperature, by merely increasing the
pressure.
BASIC TERMINOLOGIES
Latent heat principle
Any substance in passing from the liquid to gaseous state
absorbs at constant temperature specific quantum of heat
known as the latent heat of evaporation (evaporator) and
gives up latent heat on passing from gaseous to liquid
state (condenser)

Expansion principle
When a gas expands without external heat exchange its
temperature falls and when it is compressed without
external heat exchange its temperature increase.
(expansion and compressor)
UNITS OF REFRIGERATION
Kilo-Calorie
 It is defined as the amount of heat to be added
(removed) to raise (lower) the temperature of one
Kg of water by one degree celesius.
BTU
 It is defined as the amount of heat to be added
(removed) to raise (lower) the temperature of one
pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit.
 1 Kilo - calorie = 3.97 BTU

TR (Ton of Refrigeration)
 1 TR = 12000 BTU/hr = 3.517 kW
REFRIGERATION CYCLE
CO-EFFICIENT OF PERFORMANCE (COP)
The co-efficient of performance of a refrigeration
cycle is an expression of the cycle efficiency and is
stated as the ratio of the heat absorbed in the
refrigerated space to the equivalent heat energy
supplied to the compressor.
Heat absorbed from the refrigerat ed space
COP 
Equivalent heat energy supplied to the compressor
Cooling Effect (kW )

Power input to compressor (kW )

RMPU – Salient features
Savings: Light in weight, saves
fuel for hauling. Weighs 700 Kg (as

D.P DASH CEE/QC&C

compared to 1350 Kg. for
conventional A.C.)
Uses of refrigerant R-407-C in
small quantity. (less than 3Kg. as
compared to 15kgs in Conventional
System.)
AIR CONDITIONING
RMPU – Salient features
 Low Down Time: Replacement of the RMPU unit
can be done in less than TWO hours.

 Refrigerant Leak: Hermetically sealed system has no

fittings or shaft seals, thus it presents little potential
of gas leaks and avoids major break downs.

 Low Maintenance: The unit is almost maintenance

free since it uses 3 phase AC motors. No commutators
or brushes to wear out as in dc motors.

 Rapid Heat Dissipation : Mounted on the roof, thus no

dust collection in condensers, therefore, requires no
maintenance or water spraying on condenser coils
giving rapid and better heat dissipation.
AIR CONDITIONING
RMPU – Salient features

 Safe Operation: No chance of damage due to flash

floods, cattle runs or flying ballast.

 Energy Efficient : Compact and modular with

short Refrigerant efficient pipes, thus loss of
capacity through longer connecting pipes is
eliminated.

 Capacity control: Use of 4 Compressors per

coach offers control from 25% to 100% and stand-
by facility, saving electricity. Compressors are
started through time delay relays to reduce peak
current drawl.

are measured with the
help of anemometer.
 The volume of air is
computed by
multiplying the

face area(m2).
HIGH PRESSURE CUT OUT (MANUAL RESET )
RMPU is switched on
in Auto Mode . After
switching ON both

CHECKING PROCEDURE FOR OVER HEAT
PROTECTION (OHP) (600 C)
 The vane relay should be isolated (wire No:-
44&46 ) by shorting the terminals in AC control
panel. Block the return air path ( grill) using
piece of small board, due to scarcity of air
heater temperature will increase the system
should trip heater contactor and OHP
indication displayed on indication panel
 Over heat protection (OHP) set at 60 deg C. are
provided on each heating element to switch
OFF power to the heater element.
 After Generation test heater manual mode is
disconnected as per RDSO instruction
 Vane Relays
 Two vane relays are provided in each RMPU :- To ensure air
flow is present across the cooling coils and the heating
elements.
 If Vane Relays closes then only condenser fans, compressors
or heater contactor will close .
 Checking Procedure for Vane Relays

a) Switch ON blower Motor

b) Block the return air grill using piece of small board, The
system should trip due to scarcity of air through vane relay.
So vane relay is not ‘ON’ RED ‘AIRLOSS’ led will glow and
no other equipment except the blower can get switched ‘ON’
 OVER LOAD RELAYS PERFORMANCE TO BE ENSURED:

Over load relays with built in single phasing protection are

provided to protect compressor, condenser fan and blower
motors against single phasing and overload. Current setting
in O/L to be ensured .
PRE COOLING TEST
 This test shall be conducted to record the time
taken for cooling without passenger, (fresh air
blocked) after raising the inside temperature
of air-conditioned compartment to 45 deg.C
by lamp load and Heaters
 Then switch OFF the lamp load and Heaters.

 Switch ON the AC Control panel in Auto Mode

 Now record the time taken for cooling the

compartments of the coach from 450 C to 230
C(Cut off temp.)
 As per design acceptance criteria one Hr max.
permitted
PULL DOWN TEST
 Conducted to see the AC plant capability to
cool the fully occupied coach in extreme
summer conditions.
Adjust FA openings as per requirements

 Switch ON electrical compensating load (duly

reduced @ 120 W/person present inside )and
RMPU heaters in Manual mode and raise temp to
45 0C.
 Switch ON all light and fan

 Run both the plants in Auto mode

 Record time taken for cut-off

 Criterion: Time taken to be < 2 hrs

SCROLL COMPRESSORS
 The gas is compressed between two
scroll-shaped vanes.
 One of the vanes is fixed, and the other
moves within it.
 The moving vane does not rotate, but its
center revolves with respect to the
center of the fixed vane
 This motion squeezes the refrigerant
gas along a spiral path, from the outside
of the vanes toward the center, where
the discharge port is located.
 The compressor has only two moving
parts, the moving vane and a shaft with
an off-center crank to drive the moving
vane.
 Scroll compressors have only recently
become practical, because close
machining tolerances are needed to
prevent leakage between the vanes, and
between the vanes and the casing.
