PART 1

The Parts of an Introduction (First you need your topic, of course!)

1) A "hook" is usually a question or statement that gets the readers’ attention and should make
the readers want to continue reading your essay.

2) Comments and background give a history or some general information regarding the topic.

3) A thesis statement is usually the last sentence in the introduction paragraph and it describes
what the essay is about.

An Example

Topic: "The high cost of living in Tokyo"

Hook: Can you imagine how much a single day can cost if you live in Shibuya, Tokyo?

Comments and background: Tokyo is one of the most expensive cities in the world. The prices of
things in Tokyo are much higher than in other parts of Japan. Because of this, many people
living in Tokyo have a difficult time paying for their lifestyles.

Thesis Statement: Tokyo definitely is one of the most expensive cities for many reasons. (Your
body paragraphs will then detail those reasons, and you will end with a Conclusion.)

So, the Introductory Paragraph for this essay will look like this: Can you imagine how much a
single day can cost if you live in Shibuya, Tokyo? Tokyo is one of the most expensive cities in
the world. The prices of things in Tokyo are much higher than in other parts of Japan. Because of
this, many people living in Tokyo have a difficult time paying for their lifestyles. Tokyo
definitely is one of the most expensive cities for many reasons.

PART 3

Introduction Paragraph
What is an introduction paragraph?
The introduction paragraph is the first paragraph of your essay.
What does it do?
It introduces the main idea of your essay. A good opening paragraph captures the
interest of your reader and tells why your topic is important.

How do I write one?

1. Write a question or statement that attracts the readers’ attention and should make
the readers want to continue reading your essay.

2. Provide some background information about your topic. You can use interesting
facts, quotations, or definitions of important terms you will use later in the essay.

3. Write the thesis statement. The main idea of the essay is stated in a single
sentence called the thesis statement. You must limit your entire essay to the topic
you have introduced in your thesis statement.

Example:

Hockey has been a part of life in Canada for over 120 years. It has evolved into an
extremely popular sport watched and played by millions of Canadians. The game has
gone through several changes since hockey was first played in Canada.
