Lesson 1 – Intro to Photoshop
HISTORY

- Adobe Systems (1982) San Jose California, USA

- John Wamock and Charles Geschke

PHOTOSHOP

- Professional image editing software for creating and manipulating images

- Photoshop cc (Creative Cloud) uses a cloud and uses a subscription service
- Photoshop CS (Creative suite) old version not a subscription

DPI (dots per inch)

- Resolution measurement for digital scan
- 300dpi is normal in scanners and can go to 1200+ depending on the model
- Higher dpi = larger size
FILE TYPES:

1. Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) - common but not good, C tier

2. Portable Network Graphics (PNG) – for web pages, not for printing

3. Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) – animated, low res, its gif not jif

4. Tagged Image File (TIF / TIFF) – large file, for business size printing

5.Raw Image Format (RAW) – unprocessed and very larger, #nofilter

6.Photoshop Document (PSD)- photoshop format, editable

Image Size – physical size, how big the image is

Image Resolution – dots in a linear inch, how many details can you identify in the image

Lesson 2 – Layers and Selection

Layers

- stacking of images, objects or text.

- allows to move, edit and manipulate objects in a specific layer without affecting other images
contained in other layers.
- Similar to acetate on overhead projectors in concept, stacking sheets
- Composition = more than one layer
- Only psychopaths uses one layer

Layer Types

1. Image Layers = images

2. Adjustment Layers = filters

3. Fill Layers –colors only layer.

4. Type Layers – text layer

5. Shape Layers – shapes

Moving layers = Drag layers

Grouping layers = select layers then click the folder icon below or drag layers to the folder
icon/folder layer
Merging layers = transparent
Flatten Layers = not transparent
Alignment
- Looks like a bbq
- Edits the alignment of an object in context of the layer/workspace
Blends modes- change how the layer is seen and blended to layers below.
Contrast – difference in brightness
Tint- add white
Shade – add black * don’t shade using pure black use darker browns and blues instead
Tone- tinting+shading
Gradation- color transition
Selection
- Isolate a portion of a layer
- Use color range selection in the select tab in menubar to select portions with the same
colors
Scaling
- Image-sizing feature also known as seam carving.
Older versions of Photoshop require to hold shift while scaling to keep the ratio of the object the same
while in newer versions, holding shift while scaling will do the opposite, it allows the object to scale with
its ratio skewing

Lesson 3- Blending modes

Normal modes

Normal= unchanged || Dissolve = looks like deteriorated/pixel art photo

Darkening modes

Darken || Multiply || Color Burn = high contrast || linear burn = decreases brightness

Darker color = displays the lower value color

Lightening modes

Lighten = pixels are replaced || Screen = looks whitewashed || color dodge = reverse color burn

Linear Dodge = reverse linear burn || Lighten Color = reverse darker color

High Contrast Mode

Overlay = great for blending green screen the images || Soft Light = shining a diffused spotlight

Hard light = harsh spotlight || vivid||Linear|| Pin Light || Hard Mix = makes images contain only 8
colors, great for making a painting reference

Lesson 4- PHOTO EDITING AND RETOUCHING

Photo editing

- is an art/act of modifying or altering an image using different methods and tools to achieve a
certain desired result.

Color adjustment

- color grading, manipulate how the color of image is showing up

1. Brightness and 6. Hue Saturation – 11.Color Lookup

Contrast – most used changes mood of image
12.Invert
2. Levels – most used 7. Color Balance
13.Posterize
3. Curves 8. Black and White –used
14.Threshold – scene kid
for sketching references
4. Exposure fantasy
9. Photo Filter
5. Vibrance – mmost 15.Selective Color
used 10.Channel Mixer
16.Gradient Map
Ways to retouch a photo

Spot healing tool – clones an area and automatically blend it into the unwanted area.

Healing brush tool – the same as spot healing tool but in this tool you need to select an area to
blend then apply it to the unwanted portion of the picture.

Patch tool – the same as the spot healing tool but this is used to heal or patch a larger area. You
need to manually select the large unwanted area and drag it to the desired area.

Red eye tool – used to remove red eye in portrait caused by the flash of the camera.

My way of retouching face

>Duplicate photo

> make the blend mode of duplicate to overlay with opacity of 30-40\> use the brush and
eyedropper to paint the blemish the same color of the skin outside or near the blemish in the
duplicate layer

> blend and soften brush strokes using blending brush.

> make the whites of eye whiter is necessary

> this matte-tify skin but looks good enough for id pics
