TOPIC 6 ELECTRIC AND MAGNETIC FIELDS

Topic 6C Electromagnetic effects

1 The diagram below shows a simple electric motor that is used to power the
wheels in a toy car. If the wheels of the car are turned, the motor becomes a
dynamo and can recharge the cell.

(a) The current will cause the coil to rotate. Draw an arrow on the diagram to
indicate the direction of the rotation.
(1)

(b) Explain why the coil rotates when it is connected to the cell.

(c) The motor’s coil rotates in a radius of 1.25 cm, and is 8 cm long. The coil is
composed of 50 turns of wire. Calculate the force on one side of the coil
when the current is 0.5 A and the flux density at the position of the coil is
0.25 T.

(d) The coil occupies an area of 2.0 × 10–3 m2. Calculate the flux linkage in the
coil, assuming it is at 30° to the horizontal position.

(e) Without any further calculation, describe what happens to the flux linkage as
the coil rotates from 0° to 90° from the horizontal.

(f) Calculate the maximum emf when the wheels of the car are turned so that
the coil rotates 5 times every second.

2 A student thinking about Newton’s laws concludes that a magnet spinning in a

vacuum, in a zero-gravity environment, would never slow down or stop. He then
suggests that by surrounding it with an induction coil, an infinite supply of
electrical energy could be created. With reference to the relevant law, explain
why this is not the case.

3 In a device, a beam of ions with charge q and mass m is fired into a magnetic
field of flux density B. The beam moves with velocity v in a circular trajectory of
radius r in a plane perpendicular to the magnetic field.

(a) The device is used to take measurements to calculate the charge to mass
q
ratio of the ions in order to identify them. Derive the equation for that
m
involves the measurable quantities B, v and r.

(b) If both the mass and velocity of the ions were doubled, describe how this
would affect the radius of the trajectory if the charge remained the same.

..............................................................................................................................................

(c) State whether the charge on the ion is positive or negative.
