Question Stem for Question Nos. 11 and 12
Question Stem
A parallel beam of light of diameter 4 cm falls on a thin convex lens of focal length 40 cm and then on a thin
convex lens of focal length 10 cm as shown in figure (A). In figure (B) the second lens is an equiconcave lens
of focal length 10 cm and made of material of refractive index 1.5. In both the case, the second lens has an
aperture equal to 1 cm.
11. Compare the area figure(A)/figure(B) illuminated by the beam of light on the screen,
which passes through the second lens in the two cases.
12. Now liquid of refractive index is filled to the right of the second lens in case B such
that the area illuminated in both the cases is the same. Determine the refractive index of
the liquid.
JEE (ADVANCED) _2021 PART-TEST_08_PAPER-II
SECTION-III (Maximum Marks: 12)
• This section contains TWO (02) paragraphs. Based on each paragraph, there are TWO (02) questions.
• Each question has FOUR options (A), (B), (C) and (D). ONLY ONE of these four options is the correct answer.
• For each question, choose the option corresponding to the correct answer.
• Answer to each question will be evaluated according to the following marking scheme:
Chromatic Aberration
The image of a white object in white light formed by a lens is usually coloured and blurred.
This defect of image is called chromatic aberration and arises due to the fact that focal length of
a lens is different for different colours. As μ of lens is maximum for violet while minimum for
red, violet is focused nearest to the lens while red farthest from it as shown in figure.
As a result of this, in case of convergent lens if a screen is placed at FV centre of the image will
be violet and focused while sides are red and blurred. While at FR , reverse is the case, i.e.,
centre will be red and focused while sides violet and blurred. The difference between fV and
f R is a measure of the longitudinal chromatic aberration (L.C.A), i.e.,
1 1 1
( ……… (2)
f R1 R2
df 1 1
d ……… (3)
f2 R1 R2
df d d
( dispersive power ……….. (4)
f (
L.C.A = df f
Now, as for a single lens neither f nor ω can be zero, we cannot have a single lens free from
chromatic aberration.
JEE (ADVANCED) _2021 PART-TEST_08_PAPER-II
Condition of Achromatism:
1 1 1 dF df df
i.e., 1 2
F f1 f 2 F2 f12 f 22
df1 df 2
i.e., 0
f12 f 22
1 f1 2 f 2
0 i.e., 1 2 0 ………. (5)
2 2 f1 f 2
f1 f2
This condition is called condition of achromatism (for two thin lenses in contact) and the lens
combination which satisfies this condition is called achromatic lens, from this condition, i.e.,
from Eqn. (5) it is clear that in case of achromatic doublet:
1 1 1
Since, if 1 2 , 0 i.e., 0 or F
f1 f 2 F
i.e., combination will not behave as lens, but as a plane glass plate.
(2) As 1 and 2 are positive quantities, for Eqn. (5) to hold, f1 and f 2 must be of opposite
nature, i.e., if one of the lenses is converging the other must be diverging.
fC f D
f
and as C C , C D
f D D
i.e., in a convergent achromatic doublet, convex lens has lesser focal length and dispersive
power than the divergent one.
JEE (ADVANCED) _2021 PART-TEST_08_PAPER-II
15. A combination is made of two lenses of focal lengths f and f ' in contact; the dispersive
powers of the materials of the lenses are and ' . The combination is achromatic when:
16. The dispersive power of crown and flint glasses are 0.02 and 0.04 respectively. An
achromatic converging lens of focal length 40 cm is made by keeping two lenses, one of
crown glass and the other of flint glass, in contact with each other. The focal lengths of
the two lenses are :
A) 21 cm and 40 cm B) 21 cm and – 40 cm
C) – 21 cm and 40 cm D) 10 cm and – 21 cm

Paragraph-II for Questions 34 and 35:
Orthoboric acid, B(OH)3 , is the normal end product of hydrolysis of most boron compounds.
It forms flaky, white, transparent crystals in which a planar array of BO3 units is joined by
unsymmetrical H-bonds. In contrast to the short O H---O distance of 272 pm within the plane,
the distance between consecutive layer in the crystal is 318 pm, thus accounting for the
pronounced basal cleavage of the waxy, plate-like crystals and their low density (1.48 g cm3 ).

37. A substance AB crystallizes in cubic closest packing (C.C.P.) with B occupying half the

replace the B atoms and remaining occupy few interstitial voids without affecting the
dimensions of cubic crystal lattice. If density of crystal before doping is 4.8 gm/millilitre
and density after doping is 4.795 gm /ml, then calculate % of C to nearest whole no. added
