Antenna Integrated Radio Unit Description

2 Product Overview

An AIR unit consists of two Radio Units (RUs) integrated with an antenna. It is
intended to be used in a Main-Remote configuration in the same fashion as
conventional Remote Radio Units (RRUs).

The antenna in the AIR unit is a dual-polarized antenna. The active part of the
AIR unit consists of two RUs integrated into the same enclosure as the
antenna. The active part can be connected to the RBS main unit. The passive
part of the AIR unit allows connection to an existing RBS with the AIR unit
functioning as a standard antenna. The use of the passive part is optional.

2.1 Main Features

The AIR unit is intended to be installed outdoors on a pole, mast, or wall. The
active part of the AIR unit supports GSM, WCDMA, and LTE. The passive part
of the AIR unit supports frequency bands shown in Table 2. The active and
passive parts of the antenna in the AIR unit can simultaneously be used for
different radio network access standards. Each part has the Remote Electrical
Tilt (RET) function and can be electrically tilted independent of the electrical tilt
of the other antenna part. For more information about how to configure the
RET function Section 4.3.1 on page 24.

The AIR unit can also be mechanically tilted by using the down tilt installation
kit. For detailed information, see Section 2.2 on page 5 and Install Antenna
Integrated Radio Units.

The active part of AIR 11 has 2 TX branches and 2 RX branches with a dual-
polarized antenna (two antennas). The active part of AIR 21 has 2 TX
branches and 4 RX branches with two columns of dual-polarized antennas
(four antennas).

The active part of the AIR unit consists of the two RUs integrated with one
antenna part. The RUs in the active part are connected to the Digital Unit (DU)
or Baseband unit in the RBS main unit. The passive part of the AIR unit can
be used as a standard antenna.

One or two fiber optic cables connect the AIR unit active part to the RBS main
unit. Two or four (depending on AIR unit type) optional Radio Frequency (RF)
cables can connect the AIR unit passive part to another RBS.

Product Overview

Two optional RF cables can be connected to the RX sharing ports of the AIR
unit to external equipment. The RX sharing ports are not available on all AIR
unit types. For detailed information, see Section 5 on page 28.

All AIR 21 units support Multistandard Mixed Mode (MSMM) on the integrated
RUs. For more information, refer to RBS Configurations.
