1 Introduction
This document describes the Antenna Integrated Radio (AIR) 11 and AIR 21
units.
2 Product Overview
An AIR unit consists of two Radio Units (RUs) integrated with an antenna. It is
intended to be used in a Main-Remote configuration in the same fashion as
conventional Remote Radio Units (RRUs).
The antenna in the AIR unit is a dual-polarized antenna. The active part of the
AIR unit consists of two RUs integrated into the same enclosure as the
antenna. The active part can be connected to the RBS main unit. The passive
part of the AIR unit allows connection to an existing RBS with the AIR unit
functioning as a standard antenna. The use of the passive part is optional.

The AIR unit can also be mechanically tilted by using the down tilt installation
kit. For detailed information, see Section 2.2 on page 5 and Install Antenna
Integrated Radio Units.
The active part of AIR 11 has 2 TX branches and 2 RX branches with a dual-
polarized antenna (two antennas). The active part of AIR 21 has 2 TX
branches and 4 RX branches with two columns of dual-polarized antennas
(four antennas).
The active part of the AIR unit consists of the two RUs integrated with one
antenna part. The RUs in the active part are connected to the Digital Unit (DU)
or Baseband unit in the RBS main unit. The passive part of the AIR unit can
be used as a standard antenna.
One or two fiber optic cables connect the AIR unit active part to the RBS main
unit. Two or four (depending on AIR unit type) optional Radio Frequency (RF)
cables can connect the AIR unit passive part to another RBS.
Two optional RF cables can be connected to the RX sharing ports of the AIR
unit to external equipment. The RX sharing ports are not available on all AIR
unit types. For detailed information, see Section 5 on page 28.
All AIR 21 units support Multistandard Mixed Mode (MSMM) on the integrated
RUs. For more information, refer to RBS Configurations.

installation kit.

(1) Weight includes one AIR unit and the triple unit pole installation kit. After hoisting and
installing, two more AIR units can be installed on the triple unit pole installation kit.
(2) Not Applicable.
The color of the radome is gray, and light gray on the rear and side solar
shields.
The AIR unit is only for outdoor installation. Pole installations can be either on
monopoles or masts (or towers).
Avoid radio interference by keeping the area directly in front of the antenna
clear of the following:
• RBS equipment
AIR/Antenna
Antenna lobe
No interfering objects
in front of the antenna!
Ge8801E
Table 8 lists the required free space needed between AIR units to ensure
adequate airflow.
Ericsson will apply limitations to the warranty and service contract if the AIR is
painted.
• Sunlight on dark paint may increase the temperature of the AIR causing it
to shut down.
• The plastic surfaces and the plastic covers are suited for painting with
normal commercially available one or two component paints.
• Ensure that ventilation and drainage holes are free from paint.
• Failure modes directly related to overheating due to painting are not valid
for repair within the scope of the warranty or standard service contract.
• For repairs within the warranty period or a standard service contract, the
customer will be charged the additional costs for replacing all painted
parts of the unit or the complete unit.
Table 10 lists the maximum wind load for the normal operating environment for
the AIR unit installed on a single unit pole installation kit.
3.6.2 Vibration
This section describes the tolerance of the AIR unit to vibrations. The AIR unit
operates reliably during seismic activity as specified by test method IEC 60
068-2-57 Ff.
The AIR unit operates reliably during random vibration as specified by test
method IEC 60 068-2-64 Fh method 1.
The AIR unit operates reliably during shock as specified by test method IEC
60 068-2-27 Ea.
3.6.3 Materials
All Ericsson products fulfill the legal, market, and Ericsson requirements
regarding the following:
• Material declaration
• Recycling
The recommended fuse rating is 15/16 A for all the AIR units.
The AIR unit has a built-in Class 1 (Type 1) Surge Protection Device (SPD) to
protect the equipment in case of lightning and network transients. The
recommended fuse or circuit breaker rating is therefore dimensioned to not trip
the fuse or circuit breaker in case of most SPD operation.

Hardware and Software.

An AIR unit has two RUs integrated with an antenna. The antenna in the AIR
unit is a dual-polarized antenna that supports both the active and passive
parts of the AIR unit.
The active part of the AIR unit consists of two RUs integrated into the same
enclosure as the antenna.
The passive part of the AIR unit allows connection as a standard antenna with
two or more Remote Electrical Tilts (RETs). The RETs can be controlled from
the active part or the passive RF connectors.
Information about RET for LTE is found in RET Support. Information about
RET for WCDMA is found in RETU Configuration Overview. Information about
RET for GSM is found in AISG RET Support.
Information about antenna system equipment for LTE and WCDMA is found in
Antenna System Equipment or Manage Hardware Equipment. Information
about antenna system equipment for GSM is found in Antenna System
Supervision.
In AIR units without RET Cascading, the RET in the active part of the AIR unit
is controlled only by the RBS connected to the active part of the AIR unit. The
RET in the passive part is controlled by the RBS connected to the passive part
of the AIR unit.
Table 12 lists the AIR unit types and R-states without RET Cascading. All
other AIR unit types and R-states support RET Cascading as described in
Table 13.
Table 14 describes how to interpret the optical indicators on the AIR unit.
Detailed information about the optical indicators can be found in Indicators,
Buttons, and Switches.
The AIR unit contains two physically separate radio boards with a common
MMI. The MMI interface is therefore a combination of status signals from both
radio boards.
The PSU components are shown in Figure 9 and listed in Table 15.

All cables must be shielded. The shielding must be properly connected both to
the power connector and to the grounding in the power supply equipment;
otherwise, the AIR unit over voltage and lightning protection will not function
properly.

Note: The RX sharing ports are only available in AIR 21 B2A B4P. For the
unused RX sharing port connectors, leave the factory-installed
environmental plugs in the connectors.
All cables must be shielded. The shielding must be grounded on both the PSU
and the power supply equipment side with the site Main Earth Terminal (MET).
Each power cable conductor can have a 1.5–4 mm² cross-sectional area.
Note: The wire color code in the external AC power cable is market-
dependent.
Declaration of Conformity
"Hereby, Ericsson AB, declares that this RBS is in compliance with the
essential requirements and other relevant provisions of Directive 1999/5/EC
and 2011/65/EU."
