Activity 1.1
Wireless internet
Many people who use the internet do not want to be restricted by cables. They want to
be able to access the internet wirelessly wherever they are.
Imagine that you are employed in a job where you have a very busy schedule and have
to do a lot of travelling.
For this activity you have to produce an advert which advertises a phone or notebook
computer which can be used for internet access. Your emphasis in your advert must
be those features that will make the device as portable as possible and give very fast
access to the internet.
Make sure that your advert targets the busy person who is always on the move.
You are free to choose whatever software you think would be best for this task.

3 a One mark each for two of the following: 3 a One mark each for two user interfaces:
Applications will run faster Graphical user interface
More applications can be opened and run at the same time Command line interface
Users are able to move more quickly between applications Touch screen interface
b Two marks for a correct use for ROM and two marks each Voice driven interface
for a correct use for RAM. b benefits of a gUI:
ROM: Stores the boot program (1) which is the program Considered to be more user friendly compared to a CLI
needed to start up the computer (1). No commands to remember
RAM: Stores the systems software/operating system/ Easier to find programs that are running by opening
applications software (1) along with the user’s files (1). separate windows
Easier to pass data from one program to another
Questions C drawbacks of a gUI:
Student book page 6 Can be faster to type in commands rather than move the
mouse and click
1 a Any three from the following (one mark each):
Needs a lot of memory for its operation
Windows
GUI needs a lot of hard disk space for its storage
Icons Needs a powerful processor to use it
Menus/Pull-down menus benefits of a ClI:
Pointers CLI can be faster to use as you only have to type in a
Online help/Office assistants short command
b One mark for one of the following: Does not need as much memory compared to a GUI
Does not need as much hard disk space when being used
Menu driven interface
You do not need the latest processor to run a CLI
Command line interface
drawbacks of a ClI:
Voice driven interface Hard to learn as there are lots of commands to remember
Touch screen interface Commands have a certain syntax which must be used so
2 a Two marks for two points similar to the following: you need to be very precise
Programs used to control the hardware directly benefits of a touch screen interface:
Manages the system resources Very little training is needed to use the software
You do not need a flat surface on which to move a mouse
b One mark each for three of the following:
drawbacks of a touch screen interface:
Handles the inputs and outputs – controls the operation
Dirty screens can make the screen hard to read
of input and output devices such as the keyboard, mouse,
printer, screen, etc. If lots of people use them then they can pass on germs
benefits of a voice driven interface:
Recognises hardware attached to the computer –
recognises that a device such as a pen drive has been Safer to give verbal commands such as when driving
attached and loads the software needed to control it. Can issue commands in the same way humans
communicate with each other
Supervises the running of other programs – it provides a
way for the applications software such as word-processing drawbacks of a voice driven interface:
software to work with the hardware. Background noise can confuse the software
Handles the storage of data – decides where to store data Commands have to be spoken precisely
in the memory and allows the user to create folders and
sub-folders, etc. Revision questions
Maximises the use of computer memory – decides where Student book page 10
in memory the program instructions are placed. 1 One mark each for:
Handles the interrupts and decides what action to take – Hardware – the physical components of a computer system
a paper jam will stop the printer and alert the user with a (e.g. keyboard, mouse, printer, etc.)
message on the screen. Software – the set of instructions/programs that allows the
hardware to do a useful task
