Weekly Learning Module

Quarter 1 - Week 3(2 days)

Mr. Arzel Jhon A. Chicogo

Name: Venita N. Baldisimo

Let’s Begin

Is there an activity that doesn’t require us to think?

 I think that all of the activity we do every day requires thinking. Even when we sleep, our minds
still do not stop to think.

Let’s Try It

State the reasons why philosophy is a futile activity?

 The arguments supporting the view that philosophy is a useless or futile activity are mistaken.
 The first one is the indefiniteness of philosophy with regard to the answers that it provides to
philosophical question.
 The second one means that the activity of philosophizing has no practical benefits in that it does
not help us in our efforts to satisfy our material needs such as those related to the nourishment
of our body.

Answer Discussion Question on page 39

1. Science is one of the oldest and most important academic disciplines, and covers a wide variety
of subjects. I remember the saying "I will not believe without a scientific explanation". Science
helps our understanding of the world around us. Science is the result of scientific research and
experiment.
2. Physical life values are about the tangible aspects of life. I value my physical needs so much as
well as our physical health and well-being. I need to feel comfortable and I need to be aware of
my desires for possessions. Physical values are about feeling comfortable in our bodies and
environments. And I value my spiritual needs so much too. Developing our spirituality can help
us deal with life’s challenges and grow into a better, more whole and happy person.

Let’s Begin

Why all things do came from trial and error? In many ways, trial-and-error is the only form of learning
we really have. When we make an error, or fail at something, we give ourselves an opportunity to
analyze that failure, make a change, and then try again. This process repeated over time is the only real,
effective way we have to learn more about our world and solve problems in our life. We need trial and
error in our life.

(B). Answer Discussion Question on Page 42.

1. In fact, there are many other events in this world that science cannot explain. I think science cannot
explain those that relate to personal preference, moral values, the supernatural, or unmeasurable
phenomena.

2. If the question is about big bang theory then i believe. It completely explains how the universe
started. There is scientific explanation behind. Science is very essential if we just apply it properly.

3. I think that the Darwinian revolution of humans completely explains how we came into existence. The
“Darwinian revolution” remains an acceptable phrase to describe the change in thought brought about
by the theory of evolution, provided that the revolution is seen as occurring over an extended period of
time.

4. Asking questions is essential. It's helpful in discovering a person's individual way of thinking and their
mental blocks, and in applying specific mindsets to help them achieve their goals. Asking the right
questions gives people the answers they need to move forward in life.
What’s More?

State the historical highlights of philosophy on how it contributes to the development of some
disciplines and areas of knowledge.

Ancient Period

The Pre-Socratic philosophers broke away from mythological explanations of natural processes
and started the methods of explaining these processes in terms of observation and reasoning.
This gave birth to the scientific method.

Medieval Period

Philosophy was regarded as the handmaid of Christian theology. Prominent philosopher –

theologians during this period used philosophy to clarify, justify, and show the consistency of
Christian doctrines and teachings.

Modern Period

Philosophers helped solidify the foundations of science. This help came in the form of seeking
ways to justify the belief in reality of the physical world and the objectivity of scientific
knowledge.

Contemporary Period

Some philosophers clarified and justified certain features of the foundations of mathematics.
Their investigations significantly contributed to the development of mathematic s.

How a philosophical question does turns into a scientific question?

In philosophy, one asks questions within a logical framework. The question has to be
understood as one which doesn't violate any logical "laws of thought". For example, the
question can't violate the laws of contradiction. This makes philosophy more permissive than
science and allows for less detail in the level of understanding of what the question means and
entails. (credits:reddit)
