EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This study was conducted to determine the most preferred pen correction tool by students in
UiTM Cawangan Terengganu Kampus Dungun. The purpose of this study is to compare the
features of liquid correction pen and correction tape and to determine which correction tool is
more popular among students. In addition, based in the findings, the study hopes to provide
suggestions to improve the features of the correction tools for the benefit of the consumers.

Data for the study was collected through questionnaire that was distributed to 30 students who
were selected from different faculties. There were a few obstacles that we encountered while
completing this research and report, the main one being our lack of experience in conducting
a research. The findings of the study revealed that that students prefer correction pen than
correction tape. Students also choose correction pen based on durableness, price, size and
design. One of the recommendations given by the students is to produce more eco-friendly
correction tape that can be recycled.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND
The necessity for correcting mistakes made when writing has been around for as long
as writing itself. While erasers worked very well for pencil marks, it is more difficult to
correct mistakes that are made using a pen or the typewriter, hence the need for a
correction tool to overcome this obstacle. One of the first forms of correction fluid was
invented in 1956 by the secretary Bette Nesmith Graham, founder of Liquid Paper. The
invention was brought about with the realization that a mistake could be covered using
an ink or fluid that has the same colour as the paper.

A correction fluid or white-out is an opaque, usually white, fluid applied to paper to mask
errors in text. Once dried, it can be written over. The first correction fluid is packaged in
small transparent bottles, and the lid has an attached brush which dips into the bottle.
The brush is used to apply the fluid onto the paper.

Before the invention of word processors, correction fluid greatly facilitated the
production of typewritten documents. This correction tool is designed to cover mistakes
made while typing, writing, or photocopying markings on paper. Correction tools are
composed of pigments, polymeric binders and solvents that are mixed together in large
batch tanks. First developed in the late 1950s, correction tools have steadily improved
over the years.

Currently, there are several new correction tool inventions derived from the first
correction fluid. The most popular being the correction pen and correction tape. The
correction pen is like the first correction fluid but instead of a triangular shape bottle and
a brush, it is designed in a shape of a pen for ease of use. The correction pen is a liquid
product which uses a roller ball applicator on top of it. First, the pen is applied onto the
paper over the errant mark accurately. When the liquid is dry it can be written over
efficiently. A correction tape on the other hand, comes with one side of the tape, which
is placed against the error. It is coated in a white, opaque masking materials. The
pressure applied to the other side of the tape transfers these materials to the paper.

5
Correction tools may not be the most important stationary item for students, but it does
come in handy especially when the mistakes made needs to be corrected immediately.
With the increasing usage of the correction tools, we were interested to know the
different functions between the correction pen and correction tape. This study will shed
light as to which correction tool is most preferred by students today.

1.2 PURPOSE OF STUDY

The purpose of this study is to:
1. Compare the features of liquid correction pen and correction tape.
2. Determine which of the correction tools are preferred by students in UiTM
Terengganu Campus Dungun.

3. Provide suggestions for improving the features of the correction tools.

1.3 METHOD OF INVESTIGATION

In order to gather data for this study, we developed a questionnaire consisting of two
sections. Section A is the demographic section which determines the respondents
demographic background such as gender, faculty and part. Section B consists of
questions to gather information regarding the main study that is the comparison
between the two correction tools. Among others, the questions range from the general
knowledge about the tools and their opinion. The respondents need to rate if they
strongly disagreed, disagree, neutral, agree or strongly agree with the statement we
provided. The questionnaire was distributed to 30 students from UiTM Cawangan
Terengganu Kampus Dungun from different faculties and parts. We also gathered
information from the internet to provide further understanding about the product.

6
1.4 SCOPE
For this research, we only focus on the details of the product features that gives an
impact to the students of UiTM Cawangan Terengganu Kampus Dungun to purchase
the most suitable and ideal correction tools for them. Our respondents are also focused
on students from UiTM Cawangan Terengganu Kampus Dungun. A total of 30
respondents were selected and we distributed the questionnaires to students who were
at the library (Perpustakaan Cendekiawan) using simple random technique.

1.5 LIMITATION
We faced several obstacles in conduction the study.

1. Lack of experience

This was our first-time conduction a study as such we lack the experience in
conducting a research especially in designing the questionnaire and collection
data efficiently and effectively.

. 2. Lack of information

We faced problem is to get the information from the website and the lack of
journals or news or related to the study.

3, Lack of cooperation

Lack of cooperation from respondents to complete the survey is another

obstacle that we faced while completing this report.

3.0 CONCLUSION

Based on the findings of the study, we have found that students from UiTM Cawangan
Terengganu, Kampus Dungun prefers to use correction pen than correction tape. The students’
decision to choose either correction pen or correction tape is based on the correction tools
features which in this study is design, price, durableness and size. As indicated in the study,
the highest factor influencing students to choose either correction pen or correction tape is
durableness, followed by price and the least influencing factor is size and others. However,
when it comes to the correction pen or correction tape, the factors influencing the students to
choose the tools depends on the group of students or which Part they belong to. For example,
when choosing correction pen, students from Part 5 will consider the durability and price of the
product while Part 1 student will consider the design of the product. In contrast, when choosing
correction tape, Part 5 students will consider the size of the product, while Part 1 student will
consider the durability and design of the product.

4.0 RECOMMENDATION

The recommendations given below is derived from the respondents’ suggestions to improve
the product.

1. There is a suggestion that the manufacturer of this product use eco-friendlier raw
materials such as reusable packaging and safer materials for the correction fluid.
2. Packaging for correction tool to be smaller to fit in the pencil cases or even purse.
3. The design for the holder of those correction tools should change into something that
is more comfortable for easily handling.
