Air Pollution

Group Members: Sarika Phillip,Rihana Marcano,Anjalee Lulkool,Cait-Lyn Deosaran

Humans have come to rely on fossil fuel to power cars and planes, heat homes and run factories.
Doing these things pollutes the air with carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Other
greenhouse gases emitted by natural or and artificial sources also include methane, nitrous oxide and
fluoridated gases.

Air pollution can damage crops and trees in a variety of ways. Ground-level ozone can lead to
reductions in agricultural crop and commercial forest yields, reduced growth and survivability of tree
seedlings, and increased plant susceptibility to disease, pests and other environmental stresses

As the human population grows, the more air pollution and pollution in general increases. Air
pollution can harm us when it accumulates in the air in high enough concentrations.
Some, particle pollution, and toxic pollutants cause serious health concerns and people exposed to
high levels of certain air pollutants may experience:
 Irritation of the eyes, nose, throat
 Wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, breathing difficulties
 Worsening of existing lung and heart problems, such as asthma
 Increased risk of heart attack
 Prolonged exposure to air pollution can give rise to cancer and harm to the immune,
neurological, reproductive, and respiratory systems. In drastic cases, it may even cause
death.

Air pollution is a danger to every one of us and some people are especially sensitive to recurrent air
pollutants like particulates and ground-level ozone. Sensitive populations include children, elderly
people, adults, active outdoor people and persons with heart or lung diseases, such as asthma.

Air pollutants can poison wildlife through the obstruction of endocrine function, organ injury,
growth of vulnerability to stresses and diseases, lower reproductive success, and potentially death.
Changes in a number of any species because of air pollution can vastly effect the abundance and
health of dependent species. Air toxics are contributing to birth defects, reproductive failure, and
disease in animals.

Acid rain

This rain of chemicals changes the chemistry of seawater, with the increase in acidic compounds
lowering the pH of the water while reducing the capacity of the upper ocean to store carbon.
The ecological effects of acid rain are most clearly seen in aquatic environments, such as streams,
lakes, and marshes where it can be harmful to fish and other wildlife. As it flows through the soil,
acidic rain water can leach aluminum from soil clay particles and then flow into streams and lakes.
The more acid that is introduced to the ecosystem, the more aluminum is released.

Eutrophication
Eutrophication is a condition in a body of water where high concentrations of nutrients (such as
nitrogen) stimulate blooms of algae, which in turn can cause fish kills and loss of plant and animal
diversity.

Recycling has a very important role in that process, because it both reduces the amount of waste
and saves a considerable amount of resources needed for manufacturing new products . there are so
many industries that contribute to air pollution in different ways. Some of our biggest polluters are:

• Emissions from industrial plants and manufacturing activities

Many of these industries process raw materials to get the final product, which includes the use of
various toxic chemicals that contain elements like cadmium, lead, mercury, and chromium.
Byproducts of such production processes also include emissions of various gases that contribute to
the greenhouse effect and air pollution, like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide.

• Fossil fuel combustion

The leading cause of smog clouds and bad air quality in cities is fossil fuel combustion. This includes
both power plants that use fossil fuels to generate heat and emissions from cars and other vehicles.
As a result of the combustion, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, lead, dust particles, and volatile
organic compounds are released into the air, creating smog clouds that plague many major cities in
the world. Burning charcoal and wood to generate heat also results in carbon monoxide, carbon
dioxide and dust particle emissions.

• Agriculture

Crop cultivation and livestock contribute to pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. The use of
pesticides and fertilizers is considered a must in almost every plant production. If not used properly,
which happens more often than it should, these chemicals can contaminate soils, underground
waters and kill certain beneficial species, thus disrupting and impoverishing entire ecosystems.

The use of CFCs in spread cans is being reduced,The increase of trying to plant trees,Hybrid cars are
the replacement for gas fueled cars,Solar energy is the replacement for electricity. All these of these
can also help reduce sir pollution

Difficulties encountered in recycling manufactured materials.

There are many safety challenges facing the waste/recycling industry. Some safety challenges are
chemical exposure, combustible dust explosions, machine guarding hazards, and exposure to
powerful equipment with moving parts. These effect the air and cause air pollution.

Some Difficulties are:

 Methane, a greenhouse gas, is produced during recycling, and if allowed to seep out, can
lead to global warming and ozone depletion.

 Ascertaining of solid waste is very difficult. Solid waste creates several noxious gases.

 The burning plastic waste is a serious health concern because the smoke from the fire
produces black carbon.
 Metal recycling operations releases smoke into the air, that includes cancer-causing
chemicals
