Objective: Simulation of multicomponent distillation column using
a) RadFrac Model b) PetroFrac Model
Problem 5a: A multicomponent distillation column has total 20 stages (including condenser and
reboiler) with 60% Murphree efficiency. A hydrocarbon mixture enter above tray 10 of the RadFrac
column. Apply the Peng- Robinson correlation and condenser 120 psia pressure throughout the
column.
(i) Simulate the model and calculate the product compositions.
(ii) Produce a Temp (oF) Vs. Stage Plot.
Feed Specification: Vapour distillate specification
Flow rate = 100 lbmol/hr Flow rate = 50 lb/mol/hr
Temp = 120 oF Reflux rate = 125 lb mol/hr

Simulation of PetroFrac Model:
Problem 5b: An artificial petroleum refinery column (PRC) consists of a feed furnace and a
distillation tower. The tower has two pump around circuits, a partial condenser and three side
strippers. The furnace (Single stage flash type) operates at 25 psia and provides a fractional
overflash of 40% (std vol. basis) in the tower. The outlet stream of the furnace goes to the tower
on Stage 22. The tower has 26 stages with a Murphree stage efficiency equal to 90%. A steam
stream, STEAM, is introduced at the bottom of the fractionator (26th stage with on-stage
convention). There are another three steam streams STM1, STM2, STM3 used in the side
strippers. The condensers runs at 15.7 psia with a pressure drop of 5 psia. The tower pressure
drop is equal to 4 psia. The distillate rate is 10,000 bbl/day and distillate vapor fraction in the
condenser is 0.2 (StdVol basis).
A hydrocarbon mixture with following component wise flow rates enter the furnace at 117oF and
44.7 psia.
