What is STS all about?

This is an outlook on science education that

emphasizes the teaching of scientific and
technological developments in their cultural,
economic, social and political contexts.

In this view of science education, students are

encouraged to engage in issues pertaining to
the impact of science on everyday life and
make responsible decisions about how to
address such issues.
Goals of STS Education

Enabling students to formulate a critical

understanding of the interface between
science, technology and society.

Developing students’ capacities and confidence to make

informed decisions, and to take responsible
action to address issues arising from the
impact of science on their daily lives.

Can anybody give me
another example?
Activity 1

• Write down 3 technologies you’ve encountered in

your life that you feel you could not live without.
• Consider the impact each technology has on
society and environment.
• Write down an impact for both society (human)
and the environment for each of your technologies.
They can be either positive or negative impacts.
Activity 1

• [NOTE: PROCEED TO THE ACTIVITY 1, which is the

corresponding activity for this lesson, TO ANSWER. IT IS
IN A GOOGLE FORM.
• AS A REFERENCE TO THE ACTIVITY 1, YOU MAY
REFER TO THE SAMPLE ON THE NEXT SLIDE.
For Example:
• Bathroom Cleaners

• Society:
• It takes me less time to clean my bathroom.
• Environment:
• These cleaners are made of toxic chemicals that are harmful to
the environment. High Acidity and Alkalinity (ingredients:
detergent, alcohol, phenol) damages organic matters such as
skin and plants.
