Among the districts, Eranakulam has the most number of tap connections covering 52.45% of the
households. Alappuzha also shows an impressive figure of 51.37% coverage. These two districts saw an
increase in coverage of 11.60% and 17.63% respectively since the beginning of the scheme.
Kasaragod is the district with the least coverage having only 22.25% of its households having tap
water supply. Malappuram and Kozhikode are also down in the list with only 24.75% and 23.12%
coverage respectively.
Palakkad holds the credit of adding the most number of water connections during the period. It
added 1, 18,807 new connections translating to 17.93% increase. Wayanad is down this list addingonly
7,312 new connections translating to a mere 3.82% increase in coverage.
Background of the Scheme
DEPARTMENT OF DRINKING WATER AND SANITATION
The Jal Jeevan Mission is envisioned to provide safe and adequate drinking water through individual
household tap connections by 2024 to all households in rural India. The programme will also
implement source sustainability measures as mandatory elements, such as recharge and reuse through
grey water management, water conservation, rain water harvesting. The Jal Jeevan Mission is one based
on a community approach to water and will include extensive Information, Education and
communication as a key component of the mission.
