Unit Planner Year 7/8 HASS

Learning Area Subject HASS Year Level 7/8 Sequence
HASS Duration: 2 wks
Unit Title What do we leave behind?

Description Within this unit students will learn about the relationship between societies and time. Through
the exploration of archeological study and decomposition students will discover that History is a
puzzle without all the pieces. By exploring the concept of decomposition students will develop a
greater understanding of what it means to have created and maintained an empire that stands
the test of time.

Learning Intentions By the end of this unit students will understand that:

● Certain materials stand the test of time better than others

● History is a matter of piecing the pieces of a big puzzle together while blending and filling
in the gaps

● Archeological studies are significant and important to developing an understanding of

our past

Assessment Task/s
The Big Puzzle

Students are presented with a series of sources which they need to use to put together and determine key information
about a society.

Decomposition Practical

Teacher directed practical to be shown by webcam

What you will need:

- 4 Jars

- A small amount of Soil

- A piece of fruit waste (e.g. an Apple Core)

- A small piece of fabric

- A large rubber band

- A piece of Plastic (e.g. Snap Lock Bag)

- A spray bottle filled with water

Method:

1. Put about ¼ -⅓ of a cup of soil in the base of the jars

2. In each jar place one of the 4 items, the fruit, the fabric, the rubber band, and the plastic

3. Spray each jar twice with water

4. Seal up the Jars and leave for the next 5-7 days

When we check back in we should see different levels of decomposition amongst the items. The
Fruit should be broken down, the fabric should have signs of decomposition beginning, the
rubber band should be brittle, and the plastic should show virtually no signs of decomposition.
