INTRODUCTORY SUMMARY
On November 15th and 17th, 2021 we did community work for the English class at the Finca Buena
Vibra which is located in Ponce. The place was founded in the year 2015 in Ponce, Puerto Rico, by
Rafael Rodríguez. Although different types of fruits are harvested, this place specializes in planting
and harvesting coffee. In addition , Rodriguez is dedicated to beekeeping and taking care of a hen
house. Since he is the only owner of the farm, he often accepts volunteers to help him. During both
days, we participated in collecting and processing the coffee. In addition, we had the opportunity to
observe and consume some of the fruits of the farm such as “chironja”, wild berries, among others.
WORK COMPLETED
During the days of our community service we helped on the farm by collecting coffee beans. The
season of harvesting and gathering coffee grains starts in summer and ends in the fall, around the
months of October and November. Therefore the main task and work that has to be done was to
collect pounds of coffee grains. After having the coffee grains then we helped on the tedious process
of preparing the coffee for consumption. First, we washed the grains on a special machine that
separates the good coffee grains from the bad ones. Next, the good coffee grains are depulp and then
placed in closed compartments where they are going through the process of fermentation. After that,
we watched and helped turn the grains that were under the sun drying and toasting. This process has
many steps that take several weeks to then finally achieve the final result and have the coffee grain
people see daily and buy. Nevertheless, on our two days of service we contributed to the first initial
steps, especially on collecting. In general the main objective was to collect the coffee beans which
were successfully completed.
WORK REMAINING
While we were collecting the harvest of coffee beans, our conversations with Rafael Rodríguez were
very educational. He explained to us that the work at the farm is endless, so voluntary services are
always welcomed. When the coffee season ends, the soil has to be plowed to begin the planting for a
new season. Also, he has many plantations of other fruits and vegetables and an apiary, which makes
part of the list of daily tasks at the farm.
CONCLUSION
Our interview with Rafael gave us a good feel about the importance of farmers we must be aware of
and how agriculture plays a crucial role in our day to day life. On our way, we got information about
the lack of people willing to do this type of work; we were also notified about the importance of
personnel outside of the coffee harvest seasons, when it is necessary to prepare the land for the next
season and to harvest other fruits that germinate in the time presented. We are hoping for a high
number of volunteers willing to help the farmers needed to either collect fruits, cultivate or for any
type of work related to these places. In the vast majority of cases, these places are too large spaces to
be worked by a single person, so we understand that a collaborative effort would be of great help to
these independent farmers. We would be glad to promote this type of community service.
