The Number Pattern

Introduction

A sequence may be finite or infinite. The Fibonacci sequence is an infinite sequence. A finite
sequence has definite number of terms. A list of numbers which form a pattern is called a sequence.
Number patterns may be described by examining how the terms are being generated.

Objectives
∙ Examine the nature and relationship of numbers in a sequence
∙ Determine the nth term of a number sequence
∙ Generate a pattern to form a number sequence.

❖ Number Sequence
Describe the pattern of each sequence
1. 99, 100, 101, 102, 103, …
2. 5, 10, 20, 40, 80, …
3. 11, 22, 33, 44, 55, …

A pattern may have list of number in which a contestant number is added to get the succeeding
terms. For other sequences, the terms are increasing in a predictable way. There are number patterns
whose terms are decreasing, because the number to be added is decreasing in an expected way.

Examples:
To generate the next term, the number to be

added is Example
repeating 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, …
growing/increasing 14, 15, 17, 20, 24, 29, …
shrinking 118, 98, 73, 43, 8, -32, …

Directions: Write the next three terms of the following sequences. Then share how did you able to
conceptualize and arrive on those answers.
1.) 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, …
Answers: _______ , _______ , _______
2.) 1, 2, 4, 7, 11…
Answers: _______ , _______ , _______
3.) 100, 78, 54, 28, 0 …
Answers: _______ , _______ , _______
4.) 30, 35, 45, 60, 80 …
Answers: _______ , _______ , _______
5.) 151, 149, 145, 137, 121 …
Answers: _______ , _______ , _______

Create a sequence satisfying the following. Prove each answers that it satisfies the given situation.
1. The tenth term is 100.

2. The first term is 12.

3. The third term is ½.

The pattern of a number may be identified by scrutinizing how the terms are related to one
another. To generate the next term of some sequences, a constant number is added, the number to
be added increases, or the number added decreases.

❖ The Fibonacci Sequence

The Fibonacci sequence is one of the most famous formulas in mathematics. Each number in
the sequence is the sum of the two numbers that precede it.

So the sequence goes: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, and so on.

The man behind this sequence is Leonardo Pisano Bigollo, whose nickname was “Fibonacci”
which roughly means “Son of Bonacci”. He lived between 1170 and 1250 in Italy.

Study the pattern of Fibonacci sequence below.

What is the 9th term?

Answer: ____________________

How did you solve the 9th term?

Answer: ____________________

What is the pattern of the Fibonacci sequence?

Answer: ____________________

If you have noticed, adding the two consecutive terms will result to another term of the
Fibonacci sequence. Hence, it could be expressed as:

 = − + −

Where: Fn = Fibonacci numbers
Fn-1 = Previous term
Fn-2 = The term before Fn-1

Apply this concept to find the 10th to 15th term of the Fibonacci sequence.
10th term: __________
11th term: __________
12th term: __________
13th term: __________
14th term: __________
15th term: __________

Have you considered if you’re being asked what the 80th term of the Fibonacci sequence is? It
may take you an hour or more to find it. However, one may calculate the Fibonacci number using the
Golden Ratio. It is usually denoted using the Greek letter “phi” (fī) φ or ∅.

The Golden Ratio is a spherical number, which is approximately equal to 1.618034… and may be
used to find the nth term of a Fibonacci sequence using the Binet’s Formula.

(1+√5)
2
 = √5
(1−√ 5)
2−

Use this formula to find the following terms of the Fibonacci sequence.
a. 15th term: __________
b. 20th term: __________
c. 25th term: __________

Aside from the famous painting Mona Lisa, Leonardo da Vinci was also known for his Vitruvian
Man. It was one of the important works of the Italian Renaissance. According to Vitruvius (1492), the
15th century drawing was also known as “The Proportions of the Human Body”.
