BBA 104 1
Outline
• Concept of mode as a measure of central
tendency.
• Calculating mode for both group and ungroup
data.
• Graphical presentation of mode.
• Relationship between different measures of
central tendency.
BBA 104 2
• The mode of a set of data values is the value that appears
most often.[The mode of a sample is the element that
occurs most often in the collection. The mode is not
necessarily unique to a given distribution since the
probability mass function may take the same maximum
value at several points x1, x2, etc
• A statistical term that refers to the most frequently
occurring number found in a set of numbers. The mode is
found by collecting and organizing the data in order to
count the frequency of each result. The result with the
highest occurrences is the mode of the set.

is the mode.

Grouping & Analysis Method For
Calculating Mode
• Sometimes maximum frequency is repeated
more than once or concentration around the
highest frequency is less compared to the
concentration of frequencies that is more near
the other frequencies, in such cases mode
cannot be calculated directly. Here, grouping
& analysis method is used.

Graphical Representation Of
Mode
Step : 1 Represent the data in the form of a Histogram.
The height of the rectangles in the histogram is marked
by the frequencies of the class interval
Step : 2 Identify the highest rectangle. This corresponds
to the modal class of the series.
Step : 3 Join the top corners of the modal rectangle with
the immediately next corners of the adjacent rectangles.
The two lines must be cutting each other.
Step : 4 Draw a perpendicular line from the point where
the joining lines cut each other onto the x-axis. The point
where the perpendicular will meet the x-axis will give the
mode.

Advantages
• Mode value is easy to understand and to
calculate. Can be located by inspection.
• Is not affected by the extreme values in the
distribution
• Can be computed for open ended series
• Can be used to describe quantitative as well as
qualitative data.
BBA 104 15
Relationship between Mean,
Median , Mode
• Mode = 3 Median – 2 Mean
The average monthly income from interest for a
housewife is Rs. 810 & the related mean is Rs.
795. Calculate modal interest income.
