General Information About Nigerian Visa
Depending on the purpose of your journey to Nigeria, there are different types/classes of visas that are
available to match your need. Generally, a person not a citizen of Nigeria, planning to travel to Nigeria,
whether for the purpose of visit, tourism, study, work or reside permanently, must first obtain a

Certain citizen of a foreign country may be eligible to visit Nigeria without a visa provided they falls
within the categories of persons exempted based on visa free, waiver, reciprocity and bilateral
agreements.
List of countries whose citizens may enter Nigeria without Visa are:

While some foreign nationals may be exempted from entry visa for short visit to Nigeria, holders of
Passports of African Union Countries can be issued short visit visa for business and tourism purposes at
the point of arrival without pre-approval. Others can obtain e-Visa for short visit purposes with pre-
approval letter known as electronic Travel Authorization Letter (eTAL).
Generally, foreign citizens who are not exempt from entry visa must obtain their visas at the appropriate
Nigeria Embassy, High Commission or Consulate closest to applicant’s country of residence or via Pre-
Approval e-Visa System for Nigerian Visa.
Before applying, visa applicants must first decide which kind of visa (and status of residence) to apply for
according to the purpose of their visit to Nigeria. The category of visa you must obtain is defined by
Immigration Act and Nigeria VISA Policy, and relates to the purpose of your travel. Nigerian visas are
divided into the following categories:
Short Visit Visas allow eligible travelers to visit Nigeria for a period not exceeding three months (90 days)
for the purpose. This can be issued with the right of single or multiple entries. Short visit visas are
divided into various types/classes based on purpose of journey. Available visa classes for short visit to
Nigeria are as tabulated below:

Temporary Residence Visas are classes of visas that allows foreign nationals reside in Nigeria on a
temporary basis, for the purpose of employment, establishment, schooling, internship, and
accompanying employed migrants, students or diplomats as dependants. Available visa classes for
Temporary Residence in Nigeria are as tabulated below:

Permanent Residence Visas allow certain class of individuals to obtain permanent residence status in
Nigeria. It is a long-time residence visa. Type/Class of Permanent Residence are as tabulated below:

F2A – Diplomatic Visa (Non-accredited Diplomat)
F2A Visa is a single-entry short visit visa for non-accredited Diplomats who wish to visit Nigeria for
official business.
F2A – Eligibility
i. Non-Accredited Diplomats who are on a short visit to Nigeria not exceeding 90 days. They are
not permitted to work. Example include:
a. visiting Diplomats;
b. visiting government officials; and
c. visiting security personnel on government business.
ii. Temporary Work Diplomats who are on a temporary duty tour within the Embassy:
a. Embassy Staff;
b. Attaches; and
c. Security personnel.

F3 – Transit Visa
F3A Visa is a classification for transfer/direct transit passengers not staying beyond 48 hours. The direct
transit passenger requires no visa.

i. Transit passenger is permitted to connect flight to the next destination, transfer/direct transit;
ii. Transit passenger is not permitted to go outside the airport; and
iii. Duration of permitted stay for transit passenger is 48 hours

F3B Visa is a Transit Visa that allow transit passengers with onward ticket to the next destination and
crew members for sea vessel or international airline to pass through Nigeria before proceeding on the
onward journey.
F3B – Eligibility
i. Transit Passengers who have onward ticket to the next destination where entry is guaranteed
but wishes to enter Nigeria before proceeding on the onward journey; and
ii. Crew members of joining sea vessels or international airlines scheduled to depart Nigeria
territorial waters or airspace for a foreign port within the validity of Transit visa in line with
international convention guiding maritime and airspace operations.

F4A Visa is a Single-Entry Business Visa issued to foreign nationals seeking to visit Nigeria for short

citizens. Such multiple entry business visits may include for the purpose of attending:

equipment/machinery within the validity of F8A visa in line with international convention
guiding maritime and airspace operations.

Temporary Residence Visa (TRV) Categories
R11 Visa is a multiple entry Temporary Work Permit Visa issued to experts seeking to take up temporary
employment in Nigeria on invitation by corporate bodies for the purpose of providing specialized skilled
services.
It is a multiple entry visa with six months maximum length of stay (non-renewable), obtainable only at
the Nigerian Mission in the applicant’s country of residence after the approval of the Comptroller
General of Immigration.
R11 – Eligibility
a. Persons wishing to obtain employment in Nigeria on a temporary basis for the purpose of
providing specialised skilled services such as:
i. after sales Installation;

R4A Visa is a class of visa issued to EXPATRIATES seeking to enter Nigeria for the purpose of taking up
employment with the Federal, State or Local Government in Nigeria as Government Officials.

R4A Visa is available to expatriates employed by Government as Government Officials (GO) in Nigeria
including foreign technical experts coming to Nigeria in pursuance of a bilateral agreement between
Nigeria and foreign government.

GENERAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION
i. Travel document (Passport) must be valid at least 180 days after the intended date of departure
to Nigeria. If a multiple-entry visa is applied for, the passport must be valid 90 days after the last
intended date of departure; and

Irrespective of where an application has been submitted (Nigerian Mission or VAC) and whether the
application has been submitted by the applicant in person or not, the applicant may be called for an
interview at the Nigerian Embassy High Commission or Consulate.
