COMPARATIVE GRADES OF THE ADJECTIVES = GRADE DE COMPARATIE ALE

ADJECTIVULUI

There are two types of adjectives in English when discussing about comparative
rules. = Exista doua tipuri de adjective in limba engleza atunci cand vorbim despre
Regulile de Comparatie.

· short adjectives (one syllable word = cuvinte de o singura silaba) => the
comparative grades will be added to the word directly = gradele de
comparatie vor fi adaugate direct cuvantului

EX: hard (tare) => mai tare = harder

· long adjectives (more than two syllable word = adjective de mai mult de
doua silabe) => the comparative will be another word to assist with the
meaning. = comparativul va fi format printr-un alt cuvant (sau mai multe
cuvinte) adaugate adjectivului

EX: intelligent = inteligent => mai inteligent decat = more intelligent than

HOW TO FORM THE COMPARATIVE FOR LONG ADJECTIVES

· positive = gradul pozitiv = when the adjective is exactly like you find it in
the dictionary = este exact asa cum e in dictionar

EX: hard, easy, difficult,short, long, skinny etc.

· comparative of superiority = comparativ de superioritate => It is formed


by attaching the words MORE / THAN before and after the adjective. =
este format prin adaugarea cuvintelor MORE/ THAN inainte si dupa
adjectiv.

EX: intelligent, difficult, disgusting, awkward (ciudat), annoying (enervant), etc.

- more intelligent than = mai inteligent decat


- more difficult than = mai dificil decat

- more disgusting than = mai dezgustator decat

- more awkward than = mai ciudat decat

- more annoying than = mai enervant decat

OBS!!!

bu-sy => more busy than / busier = mai ocupat

nar-row => narrower / more narrow than

qu-iet => quieter / more quiet than

EX: My best friend is more intellingent than my little sister.

· comparative of equality = comparativ de egalitate => It is formed by


attaching the words AS / AS before and after the adjective. = este format
prin atasarea cuvintelor AS/AS inainte si dupa adjectiv.

EX: beautiful, glamourous, attractive, gorgeous (superb),

EX: As beautiful as = la fel de frumos ca

As glamourous as = la fel de glamour ca

As attractive as = la fel de attractive

As gorgeous as = la fel de superb ca

· comparative of inferiority = comparativ de inferioritate => It is formed by


attaching the words LESS (mai putin)/THAN (decat) before and after the
adjective. = este format prin atasarea cuvintelor LESS/ THAN inainte si
dupa adjectiv.

EX: jealous, elegant, comfortable, ambitious, colourful


Less jealous than = mai putin gelos decat;

Less elegant than = mai putin elegant decat;

Less comfortable than = mai putin comfortabil decat;

Less ambitious than = mai putin ambitios decat;

Less colourful than = mai putin colorat decat;

SHORT ADJECTIVES OF COMPARISON GRADES

· comparative of superiority = comparativ de superioritate => It is formed


by adding the ending "-er" on the adjective. = este format prin atasarea
terminatiei "-er" adjectivului.

EX: old, new, nice, ugly, long, tall, poor, rich, wealthy,hard, etc.

older = mai batran

newer = mai nou

nicer = mai dragut

uglier = mai urat

longer = mai lung

taller = mai inalt

poorer = mai sarac

richer = mai bogat

wealthier = mai avut (bogat)

harder = mai greu / dificil/tare

OBS!!! The adjectives that have a final "y" when adding the "er" syllable to form
the comparative of superiority, it will be transformed in "i". = Adjectivele scurte
care au un "y" la final de cuvant, in momentul adaugarii silabei "er" pentru
formarea comparativului de superioritate, se va transforma in "i".

OBS!!! The adjectives that have a final "-e" when adding the "-er" syllable to
form the comparative of superiority, it will be deleted. = Adjectivele scurte care
au un "e"final atunci cand se adauga silaba "-er", va fi sters si se va adauga doar
silaba "-er".

· bad => worse = mai rau

· good => better = mai bine

· old => older (regular form) = mai vechi

· old => elder (irregular form) = mai batran / mai in varsta

· far => farther = mai departe (ca spatiu)

· far => further = pe mai departe => further on => mai incolo (ca timp)

EXERCISE

1. Come in, friends! This restaurant is (good) = better than any other one.

2. I am getting more and (excited) = more excited. I am going to get my gift soon:
a gorgeous watch.

3. He is (happy) = happier than Tom is. He doesn't live in a great mansion devoid
of life.
4. This one is (cheap) = cheaper than the teddy bear you bought last week.

5. He is getting more and (anxious) = more anxious: he applied for a job and he
hasn't got an answer yet.

6. I am really glad, you know. Even (glad) = glader than you think. It has been
ages since we both left college.

7. He is (clever) = cleverer than I thought. He is very malicious.

8. He is even (good-looking) = more good looking than he used to be.

9. The milk is (cold) = colder in the fridge.

10. He is (slim) = slimer than you.
