The Wine Ode

[AL-KHAMRIYYA]

SHAIKH ‘ABDUL AL-QADIR (MAY ALLAH BE WELL PLEASED WITH HIM) SAID: “COUNTLESS BENEFITS ACCOMPANY THIS
ODE [QASIDA], CALLED THE WINE ODE [AL-KHAMRIYYA], AND ITS RECITATION.” IT IS FOR THE PURPOSE OF
ATTRACTING THE ETERNAL EMANATIONS [AL- FUYIDATAS-SAMADANIYYA] BY MEANS OF THE GILANI PRESENCE, AND
EACH VERSE IS FAMOUS FOR A SPECIAL PROPERTY, WHICH MAKES IT UNIQUE AND ABLE TO STAND BY ITSELF. IT READS

 ‫الر ِحيِۡۡم‬ َّ ِۡ‫ِۡللا‬
َّ ۡ‫الرح ٰمۡ ِن‬ ّٰۡ ‫ِبسۡم‬

Bismi ͐ llāhi ͐ r-Raḥmāni ͐ r-Raḥīm
In the Name of Allāh,
the All-Merciful, the All-Compassionate.

ۡ‫ال‬ ِ ‫ۡكاس‬
ِ ‫اتۡالۡ ِوص‬ ۡ ‫ب‬
ُّ ‫ح‬‫يۡال‬
ۡ ِ
‫ان‬ ‫َسَق‬
َ َ َ ُ ٢
Saqā-ni ͐ l ḥubbu kāsāti ͐ l-wişāli

Love gave me the goblets of union to drink,

ۡ‫ۡل َخمۡ َرِتيَۡۡنحۡ ِويۡۡتَ َع ِالي‬

ِ ‫َفُقلۡ ُت‬

Fa-qultu li-khamratī naḥwī ta ͑ ālī
so I said to my wine:
"Come here toward me!"

ۡ‫َس َعتۡۡ َو َم َشتِۡۡلَنحۡ ِويۡۡ ِفيۡۡ ُك ُؤۡوس‬

sa ͑ at wa mashat li-naḥwī fī ku ͐ ūsin
It came running and walking
toward me in tumblers,

ۡ‫َف ِهمۡ ُتِۡب َسكۡ َرِتيَۡۡبيۡ َنۡالۡ َم َو ِالي‬

fa-himtu bi-sakratī baina ͐ I-mawālī
so I experienced ecstasy in my drunkenness
among the Masters.
 ِ ‫ط‬
ۡ‫ابُۡل ُّمۡوا‬ ۡ ‫ۡل َس ِائ ِر‬
َ ۡ‫ۡالَق‬ ِ ‫وُقلۡ ُت‬
َ ٦
wa qultu li-sā ͐ iri ͐ l-Aqṭābi lummū
I said to all the Cardinal Poles:
"Assemble

ُۡ ۡ‫ِب َح ِانيۡۡ َواد‬

ۡ‫خُلۡواۡأَنۡتُمۡۡ ِر َج ِالي‬

bi-ḥānī wa ͐ dkhulū antum rijālī

at my tavern, and enter, for you are my men!

ۡ‫اۡواشۡ َرُبۡواۡأَنۡتُمۡۡ ُج ُن ۡوِدي‬

‫و‬ۡ‫م‬
َ ُ َ ‫ي‬
ۡ ِ‫و‬
‫ه‬

wa hīmū wa ͐ shrabū wa antum junūdī

Experience ecstasy, and drink, you are my soldiers!'

ۡ‫َف َس ِاقيۡۡالَۡق ۡوَمِۡبالۡ َو ِافيۡۡ َم ََلِلي‬

Fa-sāqi ͐ I-qawma bi ͐ l-wāfī malā lī
So the cupbearer of the [Lord's] people
was quick to bring me sufficient supply.

ۡ‫ۡسكۡ ِري‬ ِ ۡ‫َش ِربۡتُمَۡۡفضَۡلِتيۡۡ ِمنۡۡبع‬

‫د‬
ُ َ ١٠
Sharibtum faḍlatī mim ba ͑ di sukrī
You drank what I had left over after I got drunk,

ۡ‫ص ِالي‬ ِ ‫ۡنلۡتُمۡۡعُۡل ِويۡۡو‬

‫ات‬
ّ ِ ‫وََل‬
َ َ ُّ َ ١١
wa lā niltum ͑ uluwwī wa ͐ ttişālī
but you did not reach my exaltation
and my state of connection.
 ۡ ‫ام ُكُۡمۡالۡ ُعٰلۡىۡ َجمۡعۡۡاَّۡۡوٰۡل ِك‬
‫ن‬ ُ ‫َمَق‬ ١٢
Maqāmu-kumu ͐ l- ͑ u-lā jam ͑ an wa lākin

High is your station, each and all, and yet

ۡ‫ۡع ِالي‬ ‫ال‬

‫اۡز‬ ‫م‬ ۡ ‫م‬
ۡ ‫ك‬
ُ ‫ق‬
َ‫و‬ۡ ‫ف‬
َ ۡ ‫ي‬
ۡ ِ
‫ام‬ ‫َمَق‬
َ ََ َ ١٣
Maqāmī fawqa-kum mā zāla ͑ ā-lī

my station is above you, higher still.

ۡ‫ۡوحۡ ِدي‬
َ ‫ب‬ َ َ
ِ ‫أََن‬
ِ ۡ‫اۡفيۡۡحضۡرِةۡالتَّقۡ ِري‬

ana fī ḥaḍrati ͐ t-taqrībi waḥdī

In the presence of nearness, I am on my own

ۡ‫ص ِّرُفِنيۡۡ َو َحسِۡبيۡۡ ُذوۡالۡ َج ََل ِل‬

َ ‫ُي‬ ١٥
Yuşarrifu-nī wa-ḥasbī Dhu ͐ I-Jalāli
the Lord of Majesty disposes of me,
and He is enough for me!

َ ‫أََناۡالَۡب ِاز ُّيۡأَشۡ َه ُبۡ ُك ِّل‬

ۡ‫ۡشيۡخ‬

Ana ͐ l bāzīyyu ashhabu kulli Shaikhin

I am the grey falcon of every Shaikh

ۡ‫الۡاعۡ ِطيۡۡ ِمثَ ِالي‬

ِ ‫الرج‬
ِ
َّ ۡ ‫ي‬
ۡ ِ ‫ومنۡۡ َذ‬
‫اۡف‬ ََ ١٧
Wa-man dhā fi ͐ r-rijāli ͐ ͑ ṭī mithālī

and who among men has received the same as I?

‫طبۡا‬ ِ ۡ‫درسۡتۡالۡ ِعلۡۡمۡحٰۡتّى‬
ۡ ‫صۡر ُتۡ ُق‬ َ َ ُ ََ ١٨
Darastu ͐ l- ͑ ilma ḥaṭṭā şirtu Quṭban

I studied knowledge till I became a Cardinal Pole,

ۡ ‫ۡالسعَۡۡدۡ ِمنۡۡ َم ۡوَلىۡالۡ َم َو ِال‬

‫ي‬ َّ ‫َۡوِۡنلۡ ُت‬ ١٩
Wa niltu ͐ s-sa ͑ da mim Mawla ͐ l-mawālī

and gained felicity from the Lord of lords.

ۡ‫ۡعۡزم‬ ِ
‫از‬‫ر‬‫ط‬ِ ‫يۡخلۡ ۡعةِۡۡب‬
ِ ‫َكس ِان‬
َ َ َ َ ٢٠
kasā-nī khil ͑ atan bi-ṭirāzi ͑ azmin

He clad me in a robe in honor's style,

ِ ‫انۡالۡ َكم‬
ۡ‫ال‬ ِ ‫ج‬ ‫ي‬
ۡ ِ‫وتََّوجِنيِۡۡب‬
‫ت‬
َ َ َ َ ٢١
wa tawajjaha-nī bi-tījāni ͐ l-kamāli

and crowned me with perfection's crowns.

ۡ‫َطَل َعِنيۡۡ َعٰلۡىۡ ِس ِّرَۡق ِديۡم‬

ۡ ‫َوأ‬
٢٢
wa aṭla ͑ a-ni ͑ alā sirrin qadīmin

He made me aware of an ancient secret,

ۡ‫ط ِانيۡۡ ُس َؤ ِالي‬

َ ۡ‫َوَقَّل َدِنيۡۡ َوأَع‬ ٢٣
wa qallada-nī wa a ͑ ṭā-nī su ͐ ālī

invested me with rank and gave me all I asked.

ۡ‫ۡدَّقت‬
ُ‫ض‬ ۡ ‫الس َمۡا ِۡءۡ َو‬
ِ ‫الَۡر‬ َّ ۡۡ‫طُبوِليۡۡ ِفي‬
ُ ٢٤
ṭubūlī fi ͐ s-samā wa ͐ l-arḍi duqqat

Drums sounded in heaven and on the earth,

ۡ‫ۡالس َع َاد ِةَۡقدَۡۡب َد ِالي‬

َّ ‫اء ۡو ُس‬
ُ ‫َو َش‬ ٢٥
wa shā ͐ ūsu ͐ s-sa ͑ ādati qad badā lī

and the sergeant of bliss appeared to me.

ِ ‫عۡمَق‬
ۡ‫امي‬ ۡ ‫د‬ ‫مخ‬
ۡ ۡ
‫ال‬
‫ۡو‬ ‫ي‬
ُّ ِ‫أَناۡالۡحس‬
‫ن‬
َ ُ َ َ ََ َ ٢٦
ana ͐ l-Ḥasaniyyu wa ͐ l-mikhda ͑ u maqāmī

I am al-Hasani and the inner chamber is my station,

ِ ‫الرج‬
ۡ‫ال‬ ِ ۡ‫ق‬ِ
ۡ ‫ن‬ ‫ع‬ ۡ ‫ى‬‫ل‬ٰ‫اميۡۡع‬
ِ ‫وأَقۡد‬
َ ّ ُُ َ َ َ ٢٧
wa aqdami 'ala 'unuqi 'r-rijali

and my feet are on the necks of men.

ِۡ ‫ط‬
‫ابۡ َجمۡعۡا‬ ۡ ‫َوَوََّلِنيۡۡ َعَل‬
َ ۡ‫ىۡالَق‬ ٢٨
wa walla-ni 'ala 'l-Aqtabi jam 'an

He has appointed me over all the Cardinal Poles,

ِ ‫َفحكۡ ِميَۡۡن ِاف ٌذ‬

ِ ‫ۡفيۡۡ ُك ِلۡح‬
ۡ‫ال‬ َ ّ ُ ٢٩
fa-hukmi nafidhun fi kulli hali

so my decision is effective in every case.

 ‫ۡجمۡعۡا‬ِ‫ۡللا‬
ٰۡ ‫تِۡإٰۡلى ِب ََل ِد‬
ُۡ ‫ظۡر‬
َ ‫َن‬
َ ّ ٣٠
nazartu ila biladi 'llahi jam an

I looked upon all the cities of Allah together

ۡ‫ص ِالي‬ ِ ‫َكخۡردَلةۡعٰلىۡحكۡم‬

‫ِۡات‬
ّ
َ ُ َ َ َ ٣١
ka-khardalatin 'ala hukmi 'ttisali
as a mere mustard-seed
compared. to my connection [with Him].

ِ ‫َفَلوۡۡأَلَۡقيۡت‬
ۡ ‫ۡس ِّر‬
َ ‫يَۡف ۡو َق‬
ۡ‫ۡنار‬ ُ ٣٢
fa-law' alqaitu sirri fawga narin

Were I to cast my innermost being upon a fire,

ۡ‫ۡح ِالي‬ ِ
‫ر‬ ِ ۡۡ‫طَفتۡۡ ِفي‬
‫س‬ َ ۡ
‫ان‬
‫و‬ ۡ ‫ت‬
ۡ ‫د‬ ِ ‫َلخ‬
‫م‬
َ ّ َ َ َ ٣٣
la-khamidat wa 'ntafat fi siri hali
it would die out and be extinguished
by the secret of my state.

ۡ‫ۡميۡت‬‫ق‬ ‫و‬
ۡ ‫ف‬
َ ۡ ‫ي‬ِ
‫ر‬ ِ ‫وَلوۡۡأَلَۡقيۡت‬
‫ۡس‬
َ َ ّ ُ َ ٣٤
wa law alqaitu sirri fawga maitin

Were I to cast my innermost being upon a corpse,

ۡ‫شىِۡلي‬
ٰۡ ‫ىۡم‬ۡ
‫ل‬ٰ‫َلَقامِۡبُقدۡۡرِۡةۡالۡم ۡو‬
َ َ َ َ ٣٥
la-qama bi-qudrati "I-Mawla masha li
it would rise up through the power of the Lord
and walk for me.
 ِ ‫وَلوۡۡأُلَۡقيۡت‬
ۡ‫ۡس ِّريۡۡ ِفيۡۡ ِجَبال‬ ُ َ ٣٦
wa law ulqaitu sirri fi jibalin

Were I to cast my innermost being upon the mountains,

ِ ‫ۡالرم‬
ۡ‫ال‬ ِ ‫ن‬
َ ‫ي‬
ۡ ‫ب‬ ۡ ۡ
‫ت‬ ‫ف‬
َ‫ت‬
َ ‫خ‬
ۡ ‫ا‬
‫و‬ ۡ ‫ت‬
ۡ َّ ‫َل ُد‬
‫ك‬
َ ّ َ َ ٣٧
la-dukkat wa 'khtafat baina 'r-rimali
they would be leveled low
and disappear among the sands.

ۡ‫يۡ ِفيِۡۡب َحار‬ ِ ‫وَلوۡۡأُلَۡقيۡت‬

ۡ ‫ۡس ِّر‬ ُ َ ٣٨
wa law ulqaitu sirri fi bihärin

Were I to cast my innermost being into the oceans

ِ ‫الزو‬
ۡ‫ال‬ ِ ‫ۡغۡوۡر‬
َّ ۡۡ‫اۡفي‬ َ ‫ارۡالۡ ُك ُّل‬
َۡ ‫ص‬
َ َ ‫َل‬ ٣٩
la-sara 'l-kullu ghawran fi 'z-rawali

they would all become a depression in the void.

ۡ‫اۡش ُهۡوٌرۡأَوۡۡ ُد ُهۡوٌر‬ ِ ‫وم‬

ُ ‫اۡمنۡ َه‬ ََ ٤٠
wa mã min-hā shuhurun aw duhurun

Neither months nor long ages of time

ۡ‫َلۡأَٰۡتى ِلي‬ ِ ‫تَم ُّرۡوتَنَۡق‬

َّۡ ‫ضيِۡۡإ‬ َ ُ ٤١
tamurru wa tanqadi illa ata hi

"pass and go by without my getting news.

 ۡ‫اۡيۡأِتيۡۡ َوَيجۡ ِري‬
َ ‫َوتُخِۡب ُرِنيِۡۡب َم‬ ٤٢
wa tukhbiru-ni bi-ma ya' ti wa yajri
They inform me of what is to come and to happen,
and let me know

ِ ۡ‫وتُعِۡلمِنيَۡۡفۡۡأُق‬
ۡ‫صرۡۡ َعنۡۡ ِج َد ِالي‬ ُ َ ٤٣
wa tu 'limu-ni fa-aqsir 'an jidali

when to cease from debate.

ۡ‫ۡحكۡ ِمي‬ ‫ت‬‫ح‬

ۡ ‫ت‬
َ ۡ ۡ
‫ي‬ ِ ۡ‫ۡللاِۡمل‬
‫ك‬ ٰۡ ‫د‬ ‫َل‬
َ ِ
‫ب‬
ُ َ ُ ّ ُ ٤٤
biladu 'llahi mulki tahta hukmi
The lands of Allah are my kingdom under my rule,
and my time

ِ ‫ووقِۡتيَۡۡقبۡلَۡقبِۡليَۡۡقدۡۡصَف‬
ۡ‫اۡلي‬ َ َ ََ ٤٥
wa waqti qabla qabli qad safa li

before my transformation has been happy for me.

ۡ‫ُم ِر ِيديۡۡ ََلۡتَ َخفۡۡ َواشَۡفِإِّني‬

٤٦
muridi la takhaf washin fa-inni

My disciple, do not fear a traitor,

ِ ‫ع ُزۡومَۡق ِاتل‬
ِ َ‫ۡعنۡ َدۡالۡ ِقت‬
ۡ‫ال‬ ٌ ٌ َ ٤٧
"azumun qâtilun 'inda 'l-qitali

for I am a resolute slayer in the fray.

 ۡ‫ۡرِّبي‬ ٰۡ َ ۡ‫م ِر ِيديۡۡ ََلۡتَ َخف‬
‫ۡللا‬،
َ ُّ ُ ٤٨
muridi la takhaf: Allahu Rabbi

My disciple, do not fear! Allah, my Lord,

ۡ‫ط ِانيۡۡ ِرفۡ َعۡةِۡۡنلۡ ُتۡالۡ َم َع ِالي‬

َ ‫َع‬ ٤٩
atà-ni rif atan niltu 'l-ma 'ali
has given me eminence;
I have attained the heights.

َ ۡ‫ُم ِر ِيديۡۡ ِهمۡۡ َو ِطبۡۡ َواش‬

ۡ‫طحۡۡ َو َغ ِّن‬

muridi him wa tib wa 'sh tah wa ghanni
My disciple, experience ecstasy,
have fun, relax, sing,

ۡ‫ۡع ِالي‬ ‫س‬

ۡ ِ
َ ُ ‫َۡوافۡ َعلۡۡ َماۡتَ َشۡا ُءَۡۡف‬
‫م‬ ۡ
‫ال‬

wa "f'al ma tasha u fa-'L-ismu 'ali

do what you will, for the name is a high one.

ۡ‫ۡوِإِّني‬
َ ٌ‫م‬ ‫د‬
َ ‫ق‬
َ ۡ ‫ه‬
ُ ‫ل‬
َ ۡ ‫ي‬
ِ ِ
‫ل‬‫ۡو‬
َ ‫َوُك ُّل‬
ّ ٥٢
wa kullu waliyyin la-hu qadamun wa inni

Every saint has a precedent, and I

ِ ‫ِۡالنِبيۡۡبدۡ ِرۡالۡ َكم‬

ۡ‫ال‬ َّ ‫م‬ ‫د‬ ‫ق‬
َ ۡ ‫ى‬‫ل‬ٰ‫ع‬
َ َ َ َ ٥٣
ala qadami 'n-Nabi badru 'l-kamali
am in the footstep of the Prophet,
the full moon of perfection.
ۡ‫ينِۡۡإسۡ ِمي‬ ِ ‫أَناۡالۡ ِجيِۡل ُّيۡمحِۡي‬
ِ ‫يۡالد‬
ّ ُ َ ٥٤
ana'l-Jiliyyu Muhyi 'd-Dini ismi

I am al -Jili, Muhyi'd-din is my name,

ِ ‫سۡالۡ ِجب‬
ۡ‫ال‬ ِ ‫و‬
ۡ‫ر‬ ۡ ۡ
‫ى‬ ٰ‫وأَعۡ ََل ِميۡۡع‬
‫ل‬
َ ُ َ َ ٥٥
wa a lami 'ala rusi 'l-jibali

and my banners are on the mountain peaks.

ۡ‫َو َعبۡ ُدۡالَۡق ِاد ِرۡالۡ َمشۡ ُهۡوُرِۡۡإسۡ ِمي‬

wa ' Abdu 'I-Qadiri 'I-mashhuru ismi

Well am I known by the name of 'Abd al-Qadir,

ِ ‫وج ِّديۡۡص‬
ِ ‫احبۡالۡعيۡ ِنۡالۡ َكم‬
ۡ‫ال‬ َ َ ُ َ ََ ٥٧
wa jaddi sahibu 'l- 'aini 'l-kamali

and my forefather is the very master of perfection.
