Passive Voice

Passive voice: the voice (the grammatical relation


between subject of a verb and the action that the verb
denotes) which is used to indicate that the subject of a
verb is the receiver of the action denoted by the verb.
The Pattern of the Passive:
S + be + Past Participle (verb 3)
Example:
Active: The factories pollute the river
everyday.
Passive:The river is polluted by the factories
everyday.
However, intransitive verbs (verbs that take no object)
cannot be usd in the passsive.The intransitive verbs
such as walk, happen, sleep, come, seem, bleed, spear,
arrive, go, etc, in the Passive.

Example:
A ctive: The explosion happened.

Example of Passive voice using Modal/Auxiliaries

Active: The government should carry out good


policies.
Passive: Good policies should be carried out
by the government.
Active : The students must obey the school
regulation.
Passive: The school re gulation must be
obeyed by the students.
Exercises ! Change the following sentences from
passive into active form !
1. The composition is written by John.
2. Our house was built in 1980.
3. The news program is always watched by my mother.
4. “report text” was taught in class x yesterday.
