ETHICAL ISSUE SURROUNDING THE HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM INDUSTRY IN

Part I
Customers are paying greater attention to rooms with reduced pricing; as a

result, many people choose for cheaper rooms. With such a variable, hotels and lodging

companies have devised their own tactics and plans to offer lower room rates.

One of the tactics is to provide substandard materials in every guestroom. For

example, a customer may receive a low-cost room without realizing that it lacks the

majority of their essentials. Due to this shortage, the establishment seizes the

opportunity to increase profits by selling these essentials to customers. A room without

toiletries is an issue, and they have no choice except to buy them to remedy it.

This ethical issue must be addressed by the application of ethical standards in

the hospitality industry. Honesty should always be there; hospitality staff should always

be genuine. They should not cheat and mislead customers in order to increase profits

via misinterpretations. Despite the fact that the hospitality business is under a lot of

pressure, hospitality managers should retain the integrity of their profession by doing

what is right. Customers must be treated fairly; many visitors pick cheaper lodgings in

order to save money, and they should receive precisely what they paid for. In the

hospitality sector, one must always maintain one's reputation and morale; deception is

not acceptable.

According to the World Travel and Tourism Council's latest report from 2017, the

hospitality and tourism industry contributed 21% of the Philippines' Gross Domestic

Product. Apart from contributing to the country's economy, it also employed 5.8% of the

population in 2016. Travel agencies, airlines, hotel workers, and other passenger

transportation services are all employed by the hospitality and tourism industry. This

occupation includes the leisure industry, as well as the food and beverage industry.

According to WWTC, this employment rate was predicted to rise by around 2.6 percent

every year. However, the tourism and hospitality industry has hit its largest roadblock,

which is the pandemic.

Border closures, airport closures, and hotel limitations, as well as limits on social

gatherings, have a significant impact on the sector. According to the Department of

Tourism's report, international receipts in the first quarter of 2020 fell to 85 billion

dollars, a 36 percent decrease from 2019.

As a result, the Hospitality and Tourism Industry's skills and competences have

transformed. Some of the current trends include the following:

• Must be able to work on-site;

• A proclivity towards technology (cashless payments, online bookings, voice search,

chatbots, virtual tours);
