OIL PRESSURE SWITCH CIRCUIT

Oil Pressure Switch Circuit

DESCRIPTION
The oil pressure switch is used by the electronic control module
(ECM) to monitor the lubricating oil pressure.
- If Fault Code 143 or 415 is not present, the problem is not
related to the engine lubrication system.
- Diagnostic tool can be used to monitor the oil pressure signal
voltage going into the ECM.
- If an oil pressure switch is installed, diagnostic tool will read a
constant value of 379 kPa [55 psi] ±2 kPa [±0.3 psi] if the ECM is
reading a signal from the oil pressure switch.
- The switch is a single wire device which requires engine block
ground for operation.
- Engine Protection will activate, if enabled, if the lubricating oil
pressure drops below 41 kPa [6 psi] with the engine running.
COMPONENT LOCATION
The oil pressure switch is located on the engine block, below and
to the right of the ECM.

TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS
Step 1A) Turn key switch ON and read the fault codes using the diagnostic tool.
NOTE: If multiple temperature or pressure fault codes exist, this procedure should not be followed.

Fault Codes 352 and 386 inactive?

Yes – Go to 2A No - Possible sensor failure, a short circuit to ground

in the sensor +5-VDC common supply, or a short
circuit from pin to pin. Go to Fault Code 352.

Step 2A) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the engine harness from the oil pressure switch. Inspect the
oil pressure switch and the engine harness connector pins for the following:
• Bent or broken pins
• Pushed back or expanded pins
• Corroded pins
• Moisture in or on the connector
• Missing or damaged seals

No damaged pins?

Yes - Go to 3A No - Repair or replace the oil pressure switch or the

engine harness, whichever has damaged pins
Go to 4A

Step 3A) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the engine harness from the ECM. Inspect the engine
harness and the ECM connector pins for the following:
• Bent or broken pins
• Pushed back or expanded pins
• Corroded pins
• Moisture in or on the connector
• Missing or damaged seals.

No damaged pins?

Yes - Go to 3B No - Repair or replace the engine harness or ECM,

whichever has damaged pins
Go to 4A

Step 3B) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the engine harness from the oil pressure switch. Disconnect
the engine harness from the ECM. Check for an open circuit. Measure the resistance from pin 47 of the
engine harness connector to the oil pressure switch connector.

Less than 10 ohms?

Yes - Go to 3C No - Replace the engine harness

Go to 4A

Step 3C) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the engine harness from the oil pressure switch. Disconnect
the engine harness from the ECM. Check for a short circuit to ground. Measure the resistance from pin 47 of
the engine harness connector to engine block ground.

More than 100k ohms?

Yes - Go to 3D No - Replace the engine harness

Go to 4A

Step 3D) . Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the engine harness from the ECM. Disconnect the engine
harness from the oil pressure switch. Check for a short circuit from pin to pin. Measure the resistance from
pin 47 of the engine harness connector to all other pins in the engine harness connector.

More than 100k ohms?

Yes - Replace the oil pressure switch No - Replace the engine harness
Go to 4A Go to 4A

Step 4A) Connect all components and turn key switch ON. Disable the fault code. Start the engine, and let
idle for 1 minute. Verify that Fault Code 141 is inactive and did not reoccur. Turn key switch OFF.

Fault Code 141 inactive?

Yes - Go to 4B No - Return to the troubleshooting steps or contact

local Cummins Authorized Repair Location if all the
steps have been completed and checked again
Go to 1A

Step 4B) Connect all components and turn key switch ON. Clear the inactive fault codes using the
diagnostic tool.
All fault codes cleared?

Yes - Repair is complete No - Troubleshoot any remaining active fault codes

with appropriate troubleshooting steps.
