Philippine Literature: Writing in the Regions

(Home of the Ashfall)

Lesson (3)

Try this!

In this activity, you can work by three (3). Refer to your book regarding the essay.
You are to provide answers orally on the following:

a. the main ideas in the essay; and

The essay is written in the first person narrative style. In this mode of storytelling, the author
speaks directly to his readers, providing a sense of interaction with the author.

b. give 5 incidents in the essay and identify the tone that the speaker has in narrating each
incident.

He mentioned the use of figurative language, which is something that most authors do. When the
eruption of Mt. Pinatubo is compared to a fire cracker that was an example of figurative
language in the text. Because some ideas are too complicated to connect with the readers,
figurative language is used. The reader and the author both enjoy figurative language.

Think ahead!

Read the essay found in your book and provide answers on the following:

B 1. The author is a native of _____________________.

5. Explain the style of the writer by describing how the writer used words and sentences to
deliver his message and commenting on the use of anecdotes in the essay. (3points)

Mr Jack Wigley’s book "Home of the Ash fall" is primarily about the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in
the early 1990s. He wrote the book based on the personal observations and experiences during
the eruption, to spread the message he wishes to give and to spread knowledge. It is to spark the
minds of the readers and activate their imaginations. To speak directly to the readers, he employs
a first-person perspective. His book reflects the culture of the Mt. Pinatubo region as well as the
Filipinos' reaction to the eruption. It demonstrates that no matter how devastating the disasters
are, Filipinos always smile and assist one another. And it's a valuable lesson that the book can
teach.

6. Explain the significance and choice of the author to have an introduction that began with
startling statistics followed by a brief description of the Mt. Pinatubo eruption. (3points)

The author began his text by describing the erupting volcano, which is the main topic of the text.
Later on, he recounted his life prior to the eruption. He describes how he dealt with the situation
after the volcano had already erupted. The majority of the text focuses on what happened when
he returned to his hometown after the eruption. One thing I think could be improved is for him to
share more about how other Filipinos acted based on what he witnessed, as opposed to focusing
purely on his own experiences.

See if you can do this!

In this part, you will do the following:

1. Present a five minutes skit that will reenact one of the scenes in the essay. Look into the
aftermath of the Pinatubo eruption and what happened to the people who were affected
by the disaster.

2. After the five minutes skit:

a. Explain how Filipinos deal with adversity; and
b. Discuss how you would react if you were faced by a similar situation.

3. The author utilized Kapampangan language in some of the dialogues in the essay. List
down three possible reasons and effects that this technique made

Kapampangan, in the text, which is one of the first possible reasons and effects of this technique.

He used the technique to emphasize that the Kapampangan have a distinct way of

communicating with one another. This method also allows readers to recognize the similarities

and differences between their languages.

He allowed his fellow Kapampangan to relate to the author. That technique was used so that the

text contained something unique that readers would remember.

The final technique he used was to insert humorous lines into the text. The technique was used to

encourage readers to be enthusiastic and invested in the text they were reading. The text's most

amusing scene occurs when the barker informs him that he will be charged due to his weight.

This technique also has the effect of making readers remember something specific.
