NARRATIVE WRITING Q5: Write a story which involves getting help from an unusual source.

“You’re fired” as those words transpired from his boss’s mouth, a feeling of hopelessness drenched
Jude. His senses begun to dissociate from his body as he realized he was incompetent to do anything-
that was his third job he lost in the past 2 months.
Although losing a job is not one event to celebrate, Jude and his friends had made prior plans to visit
the annual carnival. The loud sounds and the flickering lights did not clash well with Jude’s morbid
thoughts. As the carnival stretched trough the town’s streets, Jude saw an opportunity to escape the
chaotic pandemonium and ducked into a mouth of an alley.
Thinking he was alone from the hubbubs of people, he lit a cigarette only to hear a woman’s voice
from the end of the dark alleyway; “Those kill, you know?” she said in an alluring manner. Jude
didn’t think much of the woman’s snarky comment as she wouldn’t understand what he was going
through.
As he studied the woman closer, he noticed she was a fortune teller apart of the carnival. Jude was
not one to believe in pseudoscience but in his current situation, help and guidance from anyone would
be taken into consideration.
Jude had come to an understanding he would never live an exuberant life- all he wanted was a decent
life and reckoned seeing his future would give him the head start he needed.
He paid a relatively cheap price for a single card reading from the woman. As she pulled out a card,
her face turned frightened, as if seen a ghost, “you’re going to experience a loss,” he scoffed as he
assumed she was talking about his embarrassing job history but she continued, “a loss of a life”.
The only thing Jude looked forward to everyday was being with friends and family so even if this
lady’s “help” was a superstition, he was keen to know more. He reached into his pockets for a penny
for the next reading only to find he had no change.
Jude lived close to the carnival and told the fortune teller he would be back soon with more money.
After a short drive, he was home scouring for change in his drawers
He found a few coins and with that, a letter from his late mother that he never read as her death was
too hard to accept. He brought it with him as he took this night as a sign to appreciate the people he
loves more.
The roads were extremely busy as Jude drove back to the carnival but he was determined to find out
whose life would be loss and see how he could help. At a traffic light, he opened the letter and was
shocked by his mother’s words as she talked about the large sum of inheritance she left him. He had
no clue about this. Confused, he dropped the letter and was too distracted to realize he was pass the
white line at the junction.
As he bent over the passenger seat to retrieve the letter, a speeding car crashed into Jude- losing his
life.
