Ohio Women who were Missing for More than 10 Years


were Found Alive

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- One year ago, three missing women from Cleveland were found alive in the
home of their captor Ariel Castro, a school bus driver and musician. The case shocked the
community. Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight, dissapeared separately between
2002 and 2004 They were freed in a dramatic rescue on May 6, 2013, after more than a decade
in captivity in Castro's Cleveland home.

Police said that the women were tortured by Castro, suffering prolonged sexual and
psychological abuse. He also killed Michelle´s baby when she was pregnant. He pleaded
guilty to more than 900 charges including rape and kidnapping. Later he was found dead in
his prison cell in an apparent suicide.

Presently, the three women are adjusting to their new lives/ life. Gina DeJesus said she is
learning to drive a car and to use new technology. Berry is helping families of other victims.
Knight is writing a book.

Victims:

Michelle Knight
Knight disappeared at the age of 21, in August 2002, from Lorain Avenue in Cleveland. Her
family thought (think) Michelle abandoned her house after losing custody of her son. LOSE

Berry disappeared at the age of 16, in April 2003, from Lorain Avenue.
DNA tests confirmed that Ariel Castro is the father of Berry's daughter.

DeJesus disappeared at the age of 14, in April 2004, from Lorain Avenue.
A Timeline of Events:
August 22, 2002 - Michelle Knight is last seen. The next day, she is reported missing

April 21, 2003 - Amanda Berry is last seen after finishing her day at her part-time job in a
Burger King restaurant.

April 2, 2004 -14-year-old Gina DeJesus is missing in the same area when she is walking home
from school. DeJesus was friends with Castro's daughter, Angie. Castro said to her that his
daughter Angie was at home and she could visit her.
July 2012 -Neighbor Elsie Cintron contacted police to report strange activity at Castro´s
house, including a naked woman in his garden and a little girl in one window.
May 6, 2013 - Amanda Berry, 27, Gina DeJesus, 23, and Michelle Knight, 32, are discovered alive
in Castro's Cleveland home,  with a six-year-old girl who was identified as the daughter of
Berry and Castro.
Police say Berry found an opportunity to escape and screamed “help!” through the front door
at 2207 Seymour Avenue. Two neighbors, Angel Cordero and Charles Ramsey kicked the door
and opened it. Berry carried her 6-year-old daughter, crossed the street running, and
immediately called 911. Police arrived and found DeJesus and Knight in the house. Three
brothers are suspected: Ariel Castro, Pedro Castro and Onil Castro.

May 8, 2013 - Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus return to their family homes.

May 9, 2013 - Ariel Castro, 53, appears in court. His two brothers, Pedro and Onil, were
found innocent.
July 12, 2013 – Castro faces 977 charges including aggravated murder, kidnapping and rape.
August 1, 2013 - At Court, Castro says  "I´m not a monster" and describes himself as "sick." He
says that he never raped or tortured his victims. He affirms there was "harmony" in the home.
Castro is sentenced to life in prison without parole plus an additional 1,000 years.
August 7, 2013 - Castro's Cleveland home is demolished. 
September 3, 2013 - Castro is found dead in his prison cell. He commited suicide.
