Pop-up Question:

Do you consider yourself as a medium for

another person to learn or acquire new
knowledge? Why or why not?

Yes. Since knowledge can be communicated rapidly in this age of the internet, and people can access
information more quickly and easily than ever before, I believe that I have the ability to become a
medium for another person to learn or acquire new knowledge. It’s because as the media progressively
mediate everything in society, the significance of ensuring that people should not only to engage with
the media but also to participate with society by being the media itself is becoming increasingly
apparent. We are becoming increasingly interested in being more involved in media that is being done
throughout the world, thanks to the rise of the internet and, in particular, social media. We are
becoming naturally curious about what is being researched and what knowledge is being put out to the
World so in turn, we also are naturally becoming a way for other people to learn or acquire knowledge.

ACTIVITY 1

1. Cite one study showing proofs of positive and negative effects of media and information on
individual and society. Compose a short essay expressing your reflection/insight about your finding/s.
Lule, J. (2012, March 1). Understanding Media and Culture: An Introduction to Mass
Communication. Retrieved from https://saylordotorg.github.io/text_understanding-media-and-
culture-an-introduction-to-mass-communication/s19-the-future-of-mass-media.html

Media has increased its reach in every aspect of life; whether it is facilitating social and political
change or expanding our global knowledge, both favorably and badly. Access to knowledge has
become much easier and faster thanks to media. Being able to access information improves a person's
personality by allowing them to stay up to date on what's going on in the world. All of this would
cause a person to become active in a variety of activities from an early age. One thing is certain, I
agree that media has become an important aspect of people's life of all ages nowadays.

To begin with my insights from the study I have cited, the benefits of various media platforms
such as social media (Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram), print media and electronic media provide us
with a platform to express our thoughts and share them with billions of people around the world, as
well as learn about their perspectives and connect with them. Apart from allowing us to communicate
with one another, it also allows us to learn more about different things around the World. Media
platforms have been used to discuss international, national, and local concerns which is a significant
benefit.

Moving on to my insight about media’s disadvantages, first and foremost, it makes life so simple
that we become lazy as a result. These days, adolescents are constantly interacting on their phones,
computers, and televisions, oblivious to the fact that there is a World outside of them. This is quite
embarrassing to say but I had gone through this phase as well. It has shifted our perception of reality
to the point where, in we forget to connect with those around us and become emotionally aloof (I can
totally relate to this). Honestly, I also became quite addicted to using media especially social media
since I’m an introvert and it has become a comfort place for me to go every time since interacting
with people online is much easier and comfortable than interacting with people in real life.

But without a doubt, media is an excellent platform for maintaining good connections and
connecting with others. However, there are some disadvantages to using media that are out of our
control. As a result, when using media, we must constantly be cautious.

2. In your understanding, identify the similarity and difference of people in media (PIM) and people as
media (PAM) using the Venn diagram below.
