Playing instruments has been part of daily customs of ancient Filipinos. Putting these
instruments in one musical score is a common practice in tribes and indigenous groups.
Rondalla Ensemble is one of the most popular ensembles in different towns all over the
country. It can be heard in town fiestas and other celebrations, wedding ceremonies, and
even wakes.

What is Rondalla?
The term rondalla refers to the native string ensemble of the Philippines, and it
consists of plectrum instruments such as the bandurria, laud, octavina, mandola,
guitarra, and bajo de uñas. Read “What is a Rondalla?” for more information
about it.

round hole in the middle. It is tuned an octave lower than the bandurria and plays the
lower notes in unison or accompaniment with the bass. Its strings are plucked with a
plectrum made of turtle shell or carabao horn with repeated up and down movements of
the wrist.
