Congratulations on passing our newest haunted house theme here
oooon….. The Roman Colosseum! I’m Karluz and I’ll be touring
you shortly for the night!
3 SECONDS
Sideview
The Roman Colosseum was built in Rome back in 80AD, and
mostly used for entertainment, gladiator fights, and animal hunts.
Unfortunately, the colosseum almost destroyed about two-thirds of
it, including its marble seats and decorative elements, due to
natural phenomena like lightning and earthquakes, neglect, and
vandalism. Thanks to the restoration efforts that started during the
1990s, the Colosseum is that it features all three elevation systems
or the Orders of Architecture. Before we proceed, I just want to
add some quick notes about these systems.
The system I am referring to, is the five Structural System of
Architecture. The first is post and lintel which is very ancient, and
this is where the orders of architecture fall to. But aside from it,
there is no limit to how many post-and-lintel there will be, like the
famous Stone hedge.
(NEXT VID)
Second, the truss. It is triangular in form that acts as a beam, like
bridges and theaters, where there are wide spaces with few interior
supports, like the famous Eiffel Tower.
(NEXT VID)
The third is arch. It has separated pieces of voussoirs or wedge-
shaped blocks, to form and arrange a semi-circle on the top, ending
it with the last piece called keystone. There are 10 different types
of arches, and each differs on how they were made and are
developed.
(NEXT VID)
1. First one of this type is the Triangular arch which was first
developed by the Mayans. It is formed by two large diagonal
stones that span an opening by mutually supporting each
other.
2. Round arch, which was formed in a continuous curve and was
developed by the Romans. They were often used side by side
in a series to create an arcade.
3. Segmental arch, that has a rise that is less than a semi-circle.
The next two arches were developed during the Gothic period.
4. Lancet arch which is a form of pointed arch and often used for
windows and roof structures in churches and cathedrals.
5. Equilateral arch is often used for decorative entrances and
windows. The two springing points and the crown of the
intrados form an equilateral triangle, meaning that each curve
has a chord length equal to the span.
6. Camber or Jack arch is like a lintel in that it is flat, or almost
flat, in profile, however, the voussoirs use their compressive
strength in the same way as a regular arch.
7. Trefoil arch was commonly used in religious buildings and
incorporated the shape of three overlapping rings.
8. Horseshoe arch is widely used in Islamic architecture in
regions such as Spain and North Africa. Its curves bulge out
from the springing points to create a horseshoe profile.
9. Ogee arch was developed during the English Gothic period
and follows a concave arc that flows into a convex arc with a
pointed crown. It was often used for decorative purposes
above doorways
10. Corbel Arch is one of the most ancient forms of all
arches. It consists of two opposing sets of overlapping corbels,
resembling inverted staircases, which meet at a peak and
create a structure strong enough to support weight from above.
(NEXT VID)
The fourth is a cantilever that uses beam, extending beyond the
supporting post, and the last is a skeleton construction that is often
used for multi-story buildings.

Now that we all know it, let us go back to the Order of
Architecture, present in the Roman Colosseum. Even it is almost
destroyed, as you will see, the ground level has Doric Order, the
next is Ionic Order, and the third & top story are Corinthian
Orders.
And without any more delay, I will be ending my tour for the night
and please enjoy your tour! Thank you! *LOOKS SA TOURISTS
