2. SAFETY INSTRUCTION
1. E xcessive high voltage can produce potentially hazardous X -R AY R A D IATIO N .To avoid such hazards,
the high voltage m ust not exceed the specified lim it. The nom inal value of the high voltage of this receiver is
22-23kv(14”), 25-26kv(20”, 21”) at m ax beam current.
The high voltage m ust not, under any circum stances, exceed 27.5kv (14", 20”), 29.0kv(21”).
E ach tim e a receiver requires servicing, the high voltage should be checked. It is recom m ended the
reading of the high voltage recorded as a part of the service records. it is im portant to use an accurate
and reliable high voltage m eter.
2. The only source of X -R AY R adiation in this TV receiver is the picture tube. For continuous R A D IATIO N
protection, the replacem ent tube m ust be exactly the sam e type tube as specified in the parts list.
1. P otentials of high voltage are present w hen this receiver is operating. O peration of the receiver outside
the cabinet or w ith the back cover rem oved involves a shock hazard from the receiver.
1) S ervicing should not be attem pted by anyone w ho is not thoroughly fam iliar w ith the precautions
necessary w hen w orking on highvoltage equipm ent.
2) A lw ays discharge the picture tube to avoid the shock hazard before rem oving the anode cap.
3) D ischarge the high potential of the picture tube before handling the tube. T he picture tube is highly
evacuated and if broken, glass fragm ents w ill be violently expelled.
2. If any Fuse in this TV receiver is blow n, replace it w ith the FU S E specified in the R eplacem ent P arts List.
3. W hen replacing a high w attage resistor(oxide m etal film resistor) in circuit board, keep the resistor 10m m
aw ay from circuit board.
4. K eep w ires aw ay from high voltage or high tem perature com ponents.
5. This receiver m ust operate under A C 260 volts, 50H z/60H z.
(A C 100~250 volts, 50/60H z)N E V E R connect to D C supply or any other pow er or frequency.
M any electrical and m echanical parts in this chassis have special safety-related characteristics.
These characteristics are often passed unnoticed by a visual inspection and the X -R AY R A D IAT IO N protection
afforded by them cannot necessarily be obtained by using replacem ent com ponents rated for higher voltage,
w attage, etc. R eplacem ent parts w hich have these special safety characteristics are identified in this m anual
and its supplem ents, electrical com ponents having such features are identified by designated sym bol on the
parts list. B efore replacing any of these com ponents, read the parts list in this m anual carefully.
The use of substitute replacem ent parts w hich do not have the sam e safety characteristics as specified in the
parts list m ay created X -R AY R adiation.

4. Pin Description
NO NAME DESCRIPTION
1 SO UN D IF INPU T SIF INPUT
2 EXT AUDIO INPU T EXTERNAL AUDIO INPUT
3 VCO REF FILTER The IF V CO tuned circuit is applied to these pin.
4 Its resonance frequency m ust be two tim es the if-frequency and in between a
range of 64-120M hz.
This range is suitable for the if standards as 33.4,38.9,45.75 and 58.75 M Hz.
The VCO freq. can be adjusted by IIC bus so a fixed coil can be used.
5 PLL LO O P FILTER The PLL loopfilter is a first order filter with R=390 ohm and C=100nF in series to
ground.
The loopfilter bandw idth is 60KHz and is optim al for both fast catching
and sufficient video suppression for optim al sound perform ance.
Sound perform ance can theoretically be im proved by adding a sm all
capacitor(approx.0-4.7nF) between pin 5 and ground.
This however m ust be evaluated further because the norm al video signal
response should not be effected.
6 IF VIDE O O UTPU T Although the video output im pedance is low it is recom m ended to avoid
high frequency current in the output due to for instance sound trap filters.
This can be achieved by m eans of an em itter follower at the video output
with a 1 resistor in series with the base.
7 BUS INPUT : SCL serial clock line
8 BUS INPUT : SDA serial data line
9 BANDG AP The bandgap circuit provides a very stable and tem perature ijdependent
DECO UPLING reference voltage.
This reference voltage(6.7V)ensures optim al perform ance of the TDA8374
and is used in alm ost all functional circuit blocks.
10 CHRO M A INPUT
The supplied C S -VHS input burst am plitude should be nom inally 300 pp.
(assum ed is a colour bar signa! with 75% saturation and with chrom a/burst ratio of
2.2/1).
The C S-VHS input is internally clam ped to 4V via 50 .
The external AC coupling capacitor with 50* form s a high pass filter.
A recom m ended coupling capacitor is 1 nF ; the high pass filter cut off
frequency is then approxim ately 3kHz.
11 Y/CVBS INPUT The Y S-VHS signal of 1Vpp (inclusive sync am plitude) is AC coupled to pin11.
12 M AIN The TDA8374A has a m ain supply pin 12 and a hprizontal supply pin 37.
37 PO SITIVE SUPPLY Both pins have to be supplied sim ultaneously. Notice that the IC has not been
designed to use this pin 37as start pin.
(pin 37 supplies the horizontal oscillator, PHI-1 and PHI-2)
(pin 12 supplies the rest of the circuits in th IC)
The nom inal supply voltage is 8V. W ith m in/m ax values of 7.2-8.8V.
Also in stand-by condition th IC m ust be supplied with 8V.
21
NO NAME DESCRIPTION
A Voltage detection circuit is connected to both pins.
- pin12 if V12 < 6.8V than a power on reset, PO R . is generated.
The Hout output is disabled im m ediate.
- pin37 if V37 < 5.8V than the horizontal output is disabled im m ediate.
13 INT CVBS INPUT EXT It is recom m ended that the C VBS1 int and CVBS2 ext input am plitudes
17 CVBS INPUT are 1Vpp (inclusive sync am plitude).
This, because the noise detector switches the 1 loop to slow m ode
(i.e. auto 1 m ode w hen FO A,FO B=0,0) w hen noise level exceeds 100m Vrm s
(i.e. at S/N of 20dB)
14 G RO UND All internal circuits are connected to this ground pin 14.
15 AUDIO O UTPUT The output signal is volum e controlled and is active for both internal and external
audio signals.
The nom inal gain is +12dB and -68dB,which gives a total control range of 80dB.
16 DECO UPLING Voltage variations at pin 16, which can be due to external leakage current or
FILTER TUNING crosstalk from interference sources, should be less than 50m V to ensure that tun-
ing of filters/delay cells rem ains correct.
18 BLACK CURRENT For correct operation of the loop CURR ENT inform ation is supplied to the black
INPUT current input pin.
19 BLUE O UTPUT The RG B output are supplied to the video output stages from pins 21, 20,
20 G REEN O UTPUT and19 respectively.
21 RED O UTPUT For nom inal signals (i.e. C VBS/S-VHS,-(R-Y),-(B-Y),TTX inputs) and for nom inal
control settings, then the RG B output signal am plitudes is typically 2V
BLA CK-W HITE.
22 V-G UARD INPUT The beam current lim iting function is realized by reducing the contrast (and finally
/BEAM CU RRENT the brightness) when the beam current reaches too high level.
LIM ITER The circuit falls apart in two functions:
- A verage beam current lim iting(AB L):reacting on the average content of the picture
- P eak w hite lim iting (W PL):reacting on high local peaks in the RG B signal.
23 RED INPUT G REEN The RIN,G IN,BIN signals(nom inal signal am plitude of 700m V)
24 INPUT BLUE INPUT AC coupled to pin 23,24 and25 respectively.
25 Clam ping action occurs during burstkey period.
26 RG B INSE RTIO N The table below a survey is given of the three m odes which can be selected with a

NO NAME DESCRIPTION
29
30
R-Y O UTPU T
B-Y O UTPUT
The m axim um output im pedance of pins 29,and 30 is 500 when
PAL/NTSC signals are identified. W hen SEC AM is identified by the
SECAM add-on and no PAL/NTSC is already identified by the ASM ,
then the ASM sets the -(R-Y)/-(B-Y ) output switch open (via DEM SW ).
This enables the -(R -Y)/-(B-Y) outputs of the TD A8395 to be directly
connected to pins 29 and 30 respectively.
31 B-Y INPUT The -(B-Y), -(R-Y) output signals (supplied from baseband delay line) are
32 R-Y INPUT AC coupled, via a coupling capacitor of 10nF or greater, to the -(B-Y)/
- (R-Y) inputs; both inputs are clam ped during burstkey period.

7. CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
7-1. VISION IF amplifier,afc,video demodulator
The IF signal from the tuner is fed through a S AW filter to the differential IF input (pin 48 and 49).
The first IF stage consists of 3A C -coupled am plifiers w ith a total gain control range of over 66dB .
The reference carrier for the video dem odulator is obtained by a P LL carrier regenerator(elim inating
notch filter com prom ises,as in reference tuned circuits for passive carrier regeneration).
O nly an oscillator coil is needed(pin3,4) that can be aligned via IIC bus to the double IF frequency.
The A FC inform ation is derived from the V C O control voltage of the IF-P LL and can be read via IIC
bus. B it A FB toggles w hen the picture carrier is exactly at the desired IF frequency (=half the aligned IF-P LL
frequency). A FA is active in a w indow around this point.
For fast search-tuning applications this w indow can be increased by a factor3 (A FW bit).
The autom atic gain control(A G C ) circuit operates on top sync level at negative m odulated signals or on peak
w hite level at positive m odulation, selected by M O D bit.
The tuner A G C is controlled via pin 54.
The tener A G C take over point (TO P ) can be set over a w ide range :0.8m Vrm s - 80m Vrm s IF input
signal am plitude.
The tuner A G C output m ay have to operate above V cc of TD A 8374.
Therefore pin54 is an open collector output, that can operate from 0.3up to V cc+1V (at> 2m A sink current)
The sync. seperator adapts its slicing level in the m iddle betw een top-sync and black level of the C V B S
signal. The seperated sync. pulses are fed to the first phase detector and to the coincidence detector.
The
-1 loop gain is determ ined by the com ponents at pin 43 (C + R C ).
The coincidence detector detects w hether the horizontal line oscillator is synchronized to the incom m ing video.
The line oscillator is a V C O -type, running at tw ice the line frequency.
It is calibrated w ith the X -tal oscillator frequency of the colour decoder and has a m axim um deviation of 2% of
the nom inal frequency, so no alignm ent is needed.
C alibration is done at start up(the TD A 8374 m ust first know w hat colour X -tals are connected, bit
X A ,X B ) after synchronization loss ( -1 coincidence detector "S ync Locked" bit S L).
40
The second phase detector
-2 locks the phase of the horizontal drive pulses at output pin 40 to the
horizontal flyback pulse at input pin 41.
This com pensates for the storage tim e of the horizontal deflection transistor.
The
-2 loop filter (C ) is externally connected to pin 42.
The horizontal phase can be given a static off set via IIC bus (H S H "horizontal shift).
A dynam ic correction is possible by current feedback into the
-2 loop filter capacitor.
To protect the horizontal deflection transistor, the horizontal drive is sw itched off im m ediately
w hen a pow er failure ("P ow er-O n R eset "bit P O R ) is detected.
The power failure may have corrupted the contents of the internal data registers, so the TDA8374 should be started up again.
The TD A 8374 has a separate supply input (pin 37) that only used as a clean supply voltage for the horizontal
oscillator circuits.
W ith the TD A 8374 is possible to im plem ent autom atic geom etry alignm ent, because all param eters are
adjusted via the IIC bus.
The deflection processor of the TD A 8374 offers the follow ing five controls;
- H orizontal shift
- Vertical slope
- Vertical am plitude
- Vertical s-correction
- Vertical shift
The colour decoder contains an alignm ent-free X -tal oscillator, a dual killer and difference dem odulators.
Together w ith the TD A 8395 S E C A M add-on a m ulti standard PA L/S E C A M /N T S C decoder can be built
w ith autom atic reconition.
W hich standard can be decoded depends on the external X -tal used.
Tw o X -tal pins (34 and 36) are present so norm ally no external sw itching is required.
The IC m ust be told w hich X -tals are connected (bit X A and X B ).
This is im portant, because the X -tal frequency of the colour decoder is also used to calibrate m any
internal circuit. The burst phase detector locks the X -tal oscillator w ith the chrom a burst signal.
The phase detector operates during the burst key period only, to prevent disturbance of the P LL by
the chrom a signal. Tw o gain m odes provide:
- G ood catching range w hen the P LL is not locked.
- Low ripple voltage and good noise im m unity once the P LL has locked.
41
The killer circuit sw itches off the R -Y and B -Y dem odulators at very low input signal conditions
(chrom a burst am plitude).
A hysteresis prevents on/off sw itching at low, noisy signals.
The TD A 8374 has alignm ent-free internal lum inance delay, chrom a bandpass and chrom a trap.
They are im plem ented as gyrator circuits tuned by tracking to the frequency of the chrom a X -tal oscillator.
The chrom a trap in the Y signal path is by-passed w hen Y /C input is selected (S -V H S ).
For S E C A M an extra lum inance delay is build-in, for correct delay of the lum inance signal.
TD A 8374 has a black current stabilization loop, that autom atically adjust the black level to the cut-off
voltage of the picture tubes three gun cathodes.
S ince no current is follow ing w hen the voltage the cathode is equal to the cut-off voltage of the tube,
the loop stabilizes at a very sm all gun current.
This "black current" of the three guns is m easured internally and com pared w ith a reference current,
to adjust the black level of R G B out.
The black level loop is active during 4lines at the and of the vertical blanking.
In the first line the leakage current is m easured (m ax.acceptable 100 ).
In the next three lines the black levels of the three guns are adjuster.
The nom inal value of the "black current" is 10 .
The ratio of the "black current" for the 3guns tracks autom atically w ith the w hite point adjustm ent,
so the back-ground colour is the sam e as the adjusted w hite point.
A t sw itch-on of the TV receiver the black current stabilization circuit is not yet active and R G B out are
blanked. B efore the first m easurem ent pulses appear, 0.5sec delay ensures that the deflection is active,
so the pulses w ill not be visible on the screen.
42
D uring the m easuring lines R G B out w ill supply 4V pulses to the video output stages.
The TD A 8374 w aits until the black current feedback input (pin18) exceeds 200 , w hich indicates that
the picture tube w arm -up.
Then the black current stabilization circuit is active.
A fter a w aiting tim e of about 1.0sec, the blanking of R G B out is released.
7-8. Tuning
The TD A 8395 is an alignm ent-free S E C A M colour decoder, including a cloche filter, dem odulator and
line identification circuit.
43
7-10. Base band delay line TDA4665
It couples to the TD A 8374 and TD A 8395 w ithout any sw itches or alignm ents.
The TD A 4665 consist of tw o m ain blocks :
44
7-12. Horizontal deflection
D uring the horizontal scan period (=52 ) Q 402 w ill conduct, and a saw tooth current flow s from +123V
through the prim ary w inding of the FB T to ground.
A fter this tim e Q 402 is sw itched-off and the energy stored in the FB T during the scan period w ill be
transform ed to the flyback capacitor C 406, C 416.
This energy transfer w ill take place in a cosine shape because the prim ary of the FB T and C 406,
416 from a resonant circuit.
The tim e the energy is transfered from FB T to C 406,416 and back to the FB T, is called the flyback tim e
and w ill take place in about 12 .
Three TD A 6106Q integrated video am plifiers drive cathode of the picture tube directly.
They are protected against C R T flashover discharges and E S D (electro static discharge).
The three video am plifiers, have a beam current output I black, used by the TD A 8374 black current loop
to control the black level on the cathodes.
The outputs can be connected together because the black current loop sequentially controls the black
level for each cathode.
The am plification of the TD A 6106Q is set by the resistors betw een pin 3 and 9 and betw een pin 3
(negative-input) and the TD A 8374 output.
There are no alignm ent any m ore on the C P T panel, because of the autom atic black current stabilization
and because the w hite point adjustm ent can be done in the TD A 8374 via IIC bus.

7-14. Power supply STR-S5707
Quasi-resonant operation
B y inputting the voltage of w inding of pin 6-7 of T801 w hich is synchronized w ith the energy discharge tim e
of a secondary w inding to the IN H term inal through D 810 and R 808 , quasi-resonant operation can be achieved.
W hen the pow er transistor turns off and a voltage higher than V TH 2 is applied to the IN H term inal,
C 3 im m ediately discharges and then starts charging again.
E ven after the discharge of energy of a secondary w inding is com pleted, V IN H does not im m ediately
increases. w hen it gets low er than V T H 1, the transistor turns on.
4. D rive circuit
The S TR -S 5707 applies the proportional drive system in order to m inim ize turn-on and saturation loss,
and storage tim e.
5. O C P function
O ver-current protection is perform ed pulse by pulse by directly detecting collector current of the pow er transistor.
detecting voltage is set to -1V below a reference point of G N D (ground).
6. Latch circuit w hich sustains an output from the oscillator low and stops operation of the pow er supply w hen
over-voltage protection (O V P ) circuit and therm al shutdow n (T S D ) circuit are in operation.
A s the sustaining current of the latch circuit is 500 m axim um w hen V in term inal voltage is 4V,
46
the pow er supply circuit sustains the off state as long as current of 500 m inim um flow s to V in term inal
from a start up resistor.
In order to prevent a m alfunction to be caused by a noise and so on, delay tim e is provided by C 1
incorporated in the IC and, therefore, the latch circuit operates w hen the O V P or TS D circuit is in operation,
This IC (TO P 210) is used for low -pow er concum ption w hen receiver is operating in stand-by m ode.
1. D R A IN P IN (pin5)
O utput M O S F E T drain connection. P rovides internal bias current during start-up operation via an internal
sw itched high voltage current source. Internal current sense point.
2. C O N T R O L P IN (pin4)
E rror am plifier and feedback current input pin for duty cycle control.
Internal bias current during norm al operation.
It is also used as the supply bypass and auto-restart/com pensation capacitor connection point.
