MATERNAL NURSING

Menstrual Cycle:
 To produce mature ovum (ovulation: discharge of the egg of the ovum) = 14 days before the
next cycle
 To prepare the endometrium (inner lining of the uterus)

NO FERTILIZATION: Corpus luteum regress resulted to low prog/estrogen- low ischemia-

endometrium slough off
 Progesterone: Maintain blood supply in endometrium

PHASES:
OVARIAN CYCLE
 Follicular =FSH (mature follicles)
 Ovulatory: LH (Ovulation)
 Luteal: Follicle – luteum (progesterone and estrogen) / regress
ENDOMETRIAL CYCLE
 Menstrual Phase: endometrium sloughing off
 Proliferative: thickening of endometrium (estrogen)
 Secretory: increased blood supply/secretions (progesterone)
 Ischemic: decreased on the blood supply in the endometrium
FERTILIZATION
 Union of ovum + sperm (fallopian tube )
 Sperm : 23 (chromosomes); 22 (autosomes) – Y chromosomes
 Egg: 23 (chromosomes); 22 (autosomes) – X chromosomes

Semen analysis:
*3-5 ml
*50-200 ml
* 50% motility

HCG:
- amenorrhea
- morning sickness
Mngt: Eat dry crackers in the morning; small frequent meals; increased fluid intake
FETAL STRUCTURES

 Fetal Membranes: chorion - placenta (baby: amnion)

 Amniotic Fluid:
- 800-1200ml (Ave: 1 liter); full term; 1kg=weight gain
-

COLOR
Pale Yellow Normal
Golden Yellow Hemolysis
Green Meconium Stain
Gray Infection
Brown Abortion

Function:
 Conserves heat
 Cushion/protects the fetus
 Allow movements of fetus
Sources:

 Amnion
 Fetal urine
 Respiratory secretions of the fetus

- pH: 7-7.2
B-blue
A-alkaline (A. Fluid)
Y-yellow (Acidic)
U-urine

 Umbilical Cord
- 20-22 (length)
- Too long=risk for cord coil
- Too short = abruptio placenta

AVA: 2 arteries, 1 vein

 Placenta: 500g or 1lb
- chorionic villi (fetal surface) + decidua basalis (maternal surface)
Function:
- protective barrier
- respiratory system
PHYSIOLGIC CHANGES & DISCOMFORT OF PREGNANCY
1. Cardiovascular System
 Increased blood volume
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM:
URINARY SYSTEM:
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
SIGNS OF PREGNANCY
Presumptive (subjective cues)
Psychological changes
