Menstrual Cycle:
To produce mature ovum (ovulation: discharge of the egg of the ovum) = 14 days before the
next cycle
To prepare the endometrium (inner lining of the uterus)
PHASES:
OVARIAN CYCLE
Follicular =FSH (mature follicles)
Ovulatory: LH (Ovulation)
Luteal: Follicle – luteum (progesterone and estrogen) / regress
ENDOMETRIAL CYCLE
Menstrual Phase: endometrium sloughing off
Proliferative: thickening of endometrium (estrogen)
Secretory: increased blood supply/secretions (progesterone)
Ischemic: decreased on the blood supply in the endometrium
FERTILIZATION
Union of ovum + sperm (fallopian tube )
Sperm : 23 (chromosomes); 22 (autosomes) – Y chromosomes
Egg: 23 (chromosomes); 22 (autosomes) – X chromosomes
Semen analysis:
*3-5 ml
*50-200 ml
* 50% motility
HCG:
- amenorrhea
- morning sickness
Mngt: Eat dry crackers in the morning; small frequent meals; increased fluid intake
