Have you ever asked how the languages we speak the world and our lives? There are a lot of studies that
shows that the language we speak to interact with other people can affect our decisions in our lives. Anthropology
being the study of human as a whole. You might ask yourself what linguistic anthropology is?
You must have heard the term “linguistic anthropology,” and the idea that this involves the study of
language and study of societies must have entered your mind. Linguistic anthropology studies how language works
in the society and communities. It studies how language can shape communication. Language have a big role in the
identities of societies, being a member on a group and establishing cultural beliefs and ideologies. Linguistic
anthropologist view language independently with culture and social structures, unlike linguists.
According to Pier Paolo Giglioli, anthropologists explores the relationship between worldviews,
grammatical categories and sematic fields. It also studies the influence of language on socialization and personal
relationships, and how linguistic and social communities interact.
Linguistic anthropology studies societies where culture are defined by language. An example of this is the
tribe of indigenous people living in New Guinea that speak one language. This what makes people unique. People in
this tribe has the ability to speak other languages but this specific language unique to them makes their cultural
identity. Linguistic anthropologist may also show interest in language associated to socialization. This can be about
infancy, childhood or a foreigner being encultured. Anthropologist may study societies and how they use language
to socialize young people in their communities. They might also study how language affects the world, how fast the
language spread and how does this influences societies. For example, the English language used as an international
language can have a wide range of implications for the world’s societies. This can be compared to how colonization
or imperialism affect the import of language to different countries.
Now, is it really important to study the history of language or is Linguistic anthropology really important? I
say, Yes. The history of how the societies interact with each other helps us to understand why we use certain words
or phrases. It also helps in preserving history of our ancestors and where we come from. Without it, we cannot say
things or words we say today, we cannot establish our own language. And lastly, without the knowledge and
understanding where and how these languages emerge would hinder us from sharing knowledge about these things
with the era of this world.
