Estimates the Square Root of a Whole
Number to the Nearest Hundredth
Plots Irrational Numbers (Up to Square
Roots) on a Number Line
First Quarter – Week 7
1
You learned in the last module that the principal root of a positive number can be
either rational or irrational depending on the nature of the radicand and its index of the
radical.
Directions: Read and understand the following statements below. Write the letter of the
correct answer on the space provided.
8. Look at the number line. What is the best estimate for √ 14?
A. 3.1 C. 3.5
B. 3.3 D. 3.7
12. Between which two whole numbers is the square root of 33?
A. 3 and 4 B. 4 and 5 C. 5 and 6 D. 10 and 2
13. What is the whole number part if √240 is estimated to the nearest
hundredth?
A. 13 B. 14 C. 15 D. 16
15. A square field has an area of 2000 square feet. How much fencing would
be needed to enclose the field? (Express your answer to the nearest
hundredth.)
A. 156.65 ft. B. 178.88 ft. C. 186.78 ft. D. 192.65 ft.
I. Direction: Change the following fractions to decimals. Round off the answers to the
nearest hundredths.
1
1. 5 7
7 2. 3.
9 11
III. Direction: Given are radical expressions whose principal square roots are irrational,
find two (2) closest integers to the given nth root. Between what two integers do the
following numbers lie?
1. √ 18 2. √ 77 3. √ 90
The square root of a number is the number that you multiply by itself to get
a product (it is the number that you square).
Squaring and square roots are inverse operations.
Example 1: Get the square root of 36.
Since 36 is a perfect square and
62 = 36
(−6)2 = 36
Then the square roots of 36 are 6 and – 6.
The principal root is 6.
25 < 27 < 36
You already have the skills in estimating square root of a whole number to the nearest
hundredths. Now, you will study how to plot irrational numbers on a number line.
Apply knowledge in identifying the two nearest perfect squares where the given
irrational number lies.
Examples: Plot the following irrational numbers on the number line. 4 < 8 < 9
Solution:
1. √ 8 < < 2 < <
√ 8 is between 2 and 3 and it is closer to 3 than 2. 3 is between 2 & 3
√ 8 is ≈ 2.8 4 < 8 < 9
So, 2 or 442.8
5
Solution: 25 < 35 < 36
2. √ 35 < < 5 <
√ 35is between 5 and 6; it is closer to 6.< 6 is between 5 & 6.
It is approximately 5.91 25 < 35 < 36
So, 5 or 10
5.91
11
3. √ 55
√ 55is between 7 and 8. It is closer to 7. Solution: 49 < 55 < 64
It is approximately 7.40
< < 7 <
< 8 is between 7 & 8.
49 < 55 < 64
6
So, 7 or 7.40
15
4. √ 67
√ 67 is between 8 and 9. It is closer to 8.
Solution:64 < 67 < 81
It is approximately 8.18 < < 8 <
< 9 is between 8 & 9.
64 < 67 < 81
3
So, 8 or 8.18
17
So, 10 or1510.71

I. Yes or No Are the following statements TRUE? If yes, write the word YES; otherwise,
write NO.
II. Fill in the blanks with a word or a number to complete the idea of each statement.
Choose your answer from the word/number pool below.
Word/Number Pool
Perfect square 64 2 whole number 17
4 and 5 5 and 6 49 6 8
and 7 not perfect square 0.69 36 81
√ 21
EXAMPLE:
SOLUTION #2: 16 < 21 < 25
SOLUTION #1:
16 < 21 < 25
√ 16 < √ 21 < √ 25 5
4 < √ 21 < 5
Therefore, √ 21 is between 4 & 5.
9
It is approximately 4.56. So, 4 or 4.56
Estimated value of
√ 21
DO THE SAME WITH THESE NUMBERS:
1. √ 34 2. √ 56 3. √ 83 4. √ 90 5. √ 275

A. √ 24 B. √ 30 C. √ 35 D. √ 42
11. Identify the letter that best estimates √ 168on a number line.
A. h B. g C. f D. e
12. Between which two whole numbers is the square root of 11?
A. 3 and 4 B. 4 and 5 C. 5 and 6 D. 10 and 2
13. What is the whole number part if √ 200is estimated to the nearest
