WEEKS Nail Care Equipment and Tools

1-2 Lesson

In this lesson, you study the tools and equipment used in Nail Care
Services. You will learn how to differentiate the tools and equipment according
to task requirement. Also, you will be able to describe each tool and equipment
ac- cording to use, observe safety procedures in using nail care tools and
equipment, and appreciate the value of tools and equipment in Nail Care
Services.

NAIL CARE TOOLS, MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT


Tools are known as the articles used in any nail care service which are
considered hand-held. These are also referred to as implements.
The following are the commonly used nail care tools:
1. Callous Remover: is a tool designed to stripped off calluses
and corns of the hands and feet.
2. Cuticle Nail Pusher: a tool used to
push back and loosen cuticles.

3. Cuticle Nipper: an implement used to cut the cuticles.

4. Cuticle Scissors: a tool used to cut stubborn


cuticles.

5. Finger or Manicure Bowl: is a small bowl used for soaking


the fingers to soften the cuticles.

6. Foot file: is a tool that is made of metal or sandpaper, with a


rough file on one side to remove calluses and fine file on the
other to smoothen the feet.
7. Foot Spa Basin: a large rectangular container used for
bathing and soaking the feet when giving a pedicure.

8. Manicure Tray: a flat container where all the necessary


tools and implements are placed to be used by the
manicurist.

9. Manicure Nail Brush: a plastic handled brush with nylon

bristles used to clean dirt and cosmetic residue from the nail
surface and skin.

10. Mixing Bowl: a small open-top, rounded cup- like container
used for mixing the aromatic oils and other fluids for the hand and
foot spa.
11. Nail Buffer: an implement used for smoothening the
polishing the nails.

12. Nail Cutter / Nail Clipper / Nail Trimmer: a hand tool


made of metal used to trim or cut the fingernails and toenails.

14. Nail File: an implement used to shape the free edges of


the nail with the coarse side and bevel the nail with the
finer side.

15. Orangewood Stick: a tool with pointed and rounded ends


to remove the excess nail polish on the side of the nails.

16. Pedicure Nail Brush: a tool used to remove cosmetics and


cleanse nails.

17. Plastic Container for Cotton: a small receptacle where the


cotton balls are kept.

18. Pumice Stone: a type of volcanic rock, which is actually


frothy lava solidified and forms a porous rock to remove dry
and annoying skin of the feet as well as the calluses.
19. Supply Tray: a flat container that holds the
necessary cosmetics and iplements.

20. Trolley: a wheeled cart that is pushed by hand


and used for transporting manicuring and
pedicuring tools and materials.
Equipment are the items which are more or less durable and permanent
needed for a particular activity or purpose.
The following are the different nail care equipment that are used in nail
care services:
1. Chairs: are seats with back support which have four legs and
some have four legs and some have rests for the arms.

2. Foot Spa Machine: is an electronic gadget used for soaking,


bathing and massaging the feet during a foot spa.

3. Foot Spa Stool: is a simple seat with three or four legs designed
to provide comfort and elevation during a foot spa.

4. Hand Spa Machine: is an electronic gadget used to soothe pain


of arthritis, muscle spasms and dry cracked skin of the hands.

5. Manicurist’s Chair or Stool: is the adjustable upholstered seat


fitted over a metal or chrome.

6. Manicure Table: is a furniture especially designed for


giving manicure. Usually it has a laminated plastic surface
and a drawer for storing materials. It is often fitted with ball
casters for easy mobility.

7. Sterilizer: is an equipment in a salon used for sterilizing


metal implements to kill micro-organisms.

8. Timer: is a device that can be preset to start or stop


something at a given time.
The following are the different personal protective equipment (PPE) in nail
care services.
1. Impermeable Gloves: To prevent skin from absorbing
potentially harmful ingredients which may casse skin
allerygiesirritationi or other problems

2. Eyewear: To protect the eye from potential harm

3. Splah-proof apron: To protect the parts of the body


from potential hazardous materials

4. Protective Mask: To protect the wearer’s face and


prevent the breathing of air contaminated with chemical

Safety Procedures of Using Tools and Equipment


These are generally written methods outlining how to perform a task with
minimum risk to people, equipment, materials, environment and processes.
Below are the different safety procedures and practices of using tools and
equipment:
You should always check any tool or equiipment before use
Do not use broken or damage electrical equipment, the tag must warn
people not to use the equipment
Do not touch equipment with wet hands or don’t use a wet cloth to clean
sockets.
Provide separate eating and drinking amenities for employees
Clean-up spills straight away.
Use mats on slippery floors
Store under cover in a clean, dry and dust free enviroment.
Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
