Science is all around us. Scientific laws are demonstrated and obeyed by the
invisible sub-atomic and elementary particles of matter. The biggest components of the
universe, the galaxies also behave in an orderly fashion following the laws of Physics.
The world in between these very very small components and these gargantuan
inhabitants of the universe , is our world – the human world.
Unknowingly, our world have been made complex by what we know and we are
still discovering. These complexities at times manifest as scientific and technological
benefits to us humans. However, in some instances, technological outcomes have also
degraded our health, our environment and our quality of life.

This engaging video lecture by Hannu Rajaniemi will provide you with the idea
of the scale - the breadth and depth of Science, and the various scientific and
technological endeavours that is going on. His story telling approach of enriching our
understanding of science (and the world) and how this has changed over time is an
experience we cannot access from a basic textbook. He gives humanness to the
characters (the scientists) in his science stories and portrays them like ordinary human
beings living an extraordinary life of science.

He laid down the concept that our hunger for discoveries and inventions are the
reasons for the exponentially increasing complexities in our lives and in the world .
"To understand anything you must understand everything"

Hannu Rajaniemi is a mathematical physicist, science innovator and writer. He

described himself as “the Geometric Dreamer”.He believed that science and technology
are amongst the most important factors driving societal change and that his stories of
modern physics (a difficult and complicated subject for many) is full of beautiful simple
ideas that resonate with exciting storiesl. Rajaniemi is also a renowned author of
science fiction and fantasy.

This website provides materials for easy reading and of comprehensive nature.
It has a thorough discussion on the many facets of Science; what science is and what
science is not; the width, breadth and limitations of Science; and the aims and
objectives of scientific endeavors. There is an in-depth discussion on the processes of
science, how a scientific endeavour is pursued and how a community of science
individuals adhere to specific norms of acceptable behaviours.

The Story of the Atom

To demonstrate the concepts presented on the nature of Science and scientific

endeavour, a real science undertaking in history is presented – e.g. Rutherford’s
experiments that steer the discovery of the nucleus, which in turn lead the way to the
correct understanding of the atom. The correct model and understanding of the atom
paved the way for many technologies to be spawned, giving us the convenience of
living at present times .
