Lesson Stating
1 a Fact or an Opinion
(Advertisements)
Stating a fact or an opinion in an advertisement is an important
ability. By knowing a fact, we can come up with wise choices. A fact will
help us know our needs such as food, clothing, and shelter, among
others.
By knowing an opinion, also, we can make judgment on a product
being promoted. It will help us decide which one is better than the other.

What I Know

Here are some brief advertisements of products you use at home.

Let us see if they contain factual or opinionated information.

Directions: Let us try to group them into blue (fact) and red (opinion).
Rewrite each statement in the columns provided.

Toothpaste
Ruel D. Andan

Tooth decay and bad breath are problems among children and
teenagers. They cause loss of self-confidence. To stay confident and
free of oral problems, use the toothpaste that brings magic into your
mouth. This toothpaste is fantastic. This comes with the flavors you love:
mango, strawberry, melon. To end tooth decay and bad breath, brush
your teeth and wash your mouth regularly.

Think!
Product advertisements express real name of a person, a
place, an event, or a situation. They also talk about a real
object or an action. These are referred to as facts.
Meanwhile, advertisements relate a condition. They also
show emotion and a manner of doing things. These are
referred to as opinion.

Consider these questions in determining a fact.

 Does the statement contain a name of a person?
 Does it tell a name of a real person?
 Does it say a name of a place or an event?
 Does it show a name of a real place or an event?
 Does it present a time or a situation?
 Does it lay a real time or a real situation?
 Does it concern about real objects?
 Does it tell about a complete action?

How about an opinion?

 Does the statement relate a condition or a state of being?
 Does it describe a manner of how an action is done?
 Does it show emotion?
 Does it tackle non-tangible matters?
